A DMITRI STELLETSKY, RUSSIAN, PROJECT FOR AN ICON, 1920

        Est: $8,000 - $11,000

Dmitri Semenovich Stelletsky (Russian, Belarusian, French, 1875–1947), a project for an icon kiot in watercolor and graphite on paper, 1920. Signed lower right "STELLETSKI" and annotated in French Villa Wenden Cannes / 1920", with pencil annotations to the ribs. Framed, bears on the back a label annotated in Russian in the hand of Alexander Liapin dated 1970. Provenance: Villa Wenden, Cannes, 1920; Alexandre Liapine Collection (1927-2011); Auction Auctie's 28.10.2022 lot 97. Note: The Villa Wenden in Cannes was built in 1889 on the order of Anastasia Mikhailovna of Russia (1860-1922), Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin by her marriage, little daughter of Tsar Nicolas I and sister of Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich Romanov (1861-1929) who stayed in Cannes during the winter seasons. In 1914, the painter Dmitri Stelletsky left Russia for France for good and settled in a small studio, which he nicknamed “Le Toit”, in La Napoule near Cannes. In emigration, he carried out numerous architectural and decorative projects as well as murals for the residences of the Russian, English or French aristocracy in Cannes and on the Cote d'Azur. On of the examples being the old fortified residence “Fanfarigoule”, bought in 1920 by the diplomat Sir Alan Johnstone and his wife. The present project could have been commissioned for the interiors of Villa Wenden by Grand Duchess Anastasia herself, or by her son and heir Louis Alexis de Wenden (1902-1976). But in 1923 the son-in-law of the Marshal, Mr. Grus-Gallieni, took possession of the estate and the project never saw the light of day.

        Est: £40,000 - £60,000

STELLETSKY, DMITRI (1875-1947) Procession of the Cross in Celebration of the Birth of Peter the Great, signed and dated 1917, further inscribed in Cyrillic and with a pencil sketch on the reverse. Pencil and gouache on paper, laid on cardboard, 52.5 by 52 cm. Provenance: Collection of Count Kirill and Countess Vera Naryshkin (inscription on the reverse). Important private collection, Europe. The two works offered for auction, The Betrothal of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich and Natalia Naryshkina and Procession of the Cross in Celebration of the Birth of Peter the Great, were painted by Dmitri Stelletsky to the commission of Countess Vera Naryshkin (1883–1963) for her husband Kirill Vasilievich (1877–1950), who was a descendant of Natalia Naryshkin, the mother of Peter the Great. The Countess wished to obtain a series of decorative panels, illustrating principal events in the history of the Naryshkin family. It is not known for certain how many scenes the artist intended to execute, but the present works undoubtedly had paramount importance in the cycle. They show events that determined the history of Russia from the end of the 17th century and the role performed in them by the Naryshkin family. These decorative panels are far from being the only works by Dmitry Stelletsky for the Naryshkins. In 1911–1913 Stelletsky created the iconostasis for the Orthodox church at the estate belonging to Count Alexander Medem, the son of Countess Alexandra Naryshkin, and in 1928 he decorated the exposition galleries for The Exhibition of Old and New Russian Art, organised in Brussels by Vera Naryshkin. This patronage of the artist from the noble family is not accidental. Stelletsky was a committed proponent of the revival of national religious and folk art, the tendency which played major role in the Russian culture at the turn of the 20th century. The artist travelled extensively to the ancient Russian cities and monasteries in the 1900s, studying traditional art. His borrowings from the medieval masters were not just limited to colour and form – he even mixed his paints using the recipes of the artists of the past. Stelletsky, with his knowledge of the ancient artistic traditions and the ability to mix them with the contemporary artistic language, was respected as a kind of keeper of the past. His images of the Holy Russia are permeated with the national ethos and spirituality, which were high in demand with the Russian ruling elite in the 1900–1910s.
