Painter, b. 1940 -

(b Newark, New Jersey 1940) American artist. Born Iris Patricia Sukoneck, Steir is best known for her paintings depicting waterfalls and considers Chinese landscape painting one of her greatest influences. She received her BFA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York in 1961. Steir served as the art director for Harper & Row Publishing from 1966-1969 and then went on to teach at Parsons School of Design and Princeton Univsersity. In 1973 she moved to Los Angeles to teach at the California Institute of the Arts. She has received many prestigious awards and grants, including the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1992 and an Individual Artist’s Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1974. Today, Steir divides her time between New York and Amsterdam and has continued to exhibit regularly since 1963.
