THÉOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLIN (1859-1953) EN BELGIQUE LES BELGES ONT FAIM. 1915. 50 1/2x35 3/4 inches, 128x91 cm. I. Lapina, Paris. Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and staining in margins and image; vertical and horizontal folds. Promoting a raffle to raise money for the starving Belgians, whose country was the first to be hit by Germany in World War I, Steinlen uses orange and black to depict a family of hungry refugees. Despite the solemnity of the cause, Steinlen's tenderness is evident in the image, especially in his rendering of the two young girls. "Steinlen's war posters were designed for the relief of distress in different countries, not only in Belgium but also in Serbia and Russia" (IWM p. 55). By 1917-18, most of Steinlen's war posters were entirely black and white, but here he still utilizes brighter colors. Steinlen 56, Rickards 152, Gallo p. 191, IWM p. 55.
