Original vintage WWI Propaganda Poster - In Belgium the Belgians are Hungry (En Belgique Les Belges Ont Faim). Poster designed by Theophile Alexandre Steinlen (November 10, 1859 – December 13, 1923), a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker. Born in Lausanne, Steinlen studied at the University of Lausanne before taking a job as a designer trainee at a textile mill in Mulhouse in eastern France. In his early twenties he was still developing his skills as a painter when he and his new wife were encouraged by the painter François Bocion to move to the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. Once there, Steinlen was befriended by the painter Adolphe Willette who introduced him to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir that led to his commissions to do poster art for the cabaret owner/entertainer, Aristide Bruant and other commercial enterprises. The poster image depicts a group of six Belgian people standing holding pails. They include a woman wearing a black shawl, standing centre, and an old man with a long moustache in the background. This sits next to text which translates to - Artistic tombola to raise funds for feeding the people of Belgium. Every five-franc ticket entitles the holder to: A - a souvenir, a special work: either an engraving by the painter Firmin Baes or a medal charm by the sculptor Devreese. B - the tombola draw of gifts of applied art (lacework, embroidery, paintings on vases, silks, etc., the handiwork of Belgian women. Published by L'Alliance Franco-Belge and printed by I Lapina Imprimerie, Paris. Large size. Fair condition, paper losses, tears, staining, creasing, foxing. Country of issue: France, designer: Theophile Steinlen, size (cm): 128x94, year of printing: 1915.

Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen Le Journal / La Traite des Blanches 1899 63.25 h x 49 w in (161 x 124 cm) "Quite a few literary works of this era first saw the light of day as installments printed in daily or weekly papers... A major novel appearing in a trickle would hold readers for several months, with the hope that [readers] would get used to the paper's other features and remain loyal afterwards. The lure of a new sensational novel was often used to advertise the paper itself. And sensational is the word for this poster advertising installments of 'White Slavery.' It depicts a heartless pimp with three of his victims. One is arguing passionately for her freedom, one seems resigned to her fate, and one in utter despair" (Gold, p. 66). This uncensored, larger format of the poster—seen here without the top text banner—is the rarest of all versions. Imp. Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen Affiches Charles Verneau. "La Rue" 1896 91.5 h x 116.5 w in (232 x 296 cm) "One of Steinlen's finest lithographic achievements was a huge, six-sheet poster for Affiches Charles Verneau. The bustling street scene is alive with an assortment of colorful Montmartre types, prominent among them the artist's daughter, Colette, with a hoop, being carefully led by her mother, Emilie. Note how Steinlen shows the working class side by side with the smartly dressed bourgeois, giving them equal dignity—one of his most endearing traits" (Wine Spectator, p. 110). Ruth Iskin indicates that while "this was surely an idealized rendition of the poster's mixed audience... Steinlen was celebrating the street as a democratic space" (Iskin, p. 200). L'Estampe et l'Affiche concluded its ecstatic review of this poster by declaring "One can't applaud it enough" (1897, p. 20). Seldom available for sale, this poster is best viewed in person to be truly appreciated. Imp. Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen Le Journal / Les Mysteres de la Tour Pointue 1899 31.75 h x 23.75 w in (81 x 60 cm) Based on the memories of a retired police chief, "Les Mysteres de la Tour Pointue" (Mysteries of the Pointed Tower) is one of many autobiographical installments in this series which ran for at least two years in Le Journal. Each involved some sort of gruesome murder, such as the one portrayed here in which a dastardly pair strangle an elderly gentleman, presumably over what is or is not written on the pages placed on the table. The fine grouping of affectionate animals makes for a most appealing image. It also shows Steinlen's gift for effective poster design: his composition forces us to look at the advertising message as our eyes go from the cats above to the dogs below. Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen Chocolats / Thes Cie Francaise 1895 45.5 h x 30 w in (116 x 76 cm) In one of Steinlen's most tender posters, we are offered an intimate peek into his private life. Using his wife Emilie and his daughter Colette as models, we witness the artist's family at breakfast. As Emilie quietly meditates over the day at hand, she sips on Chinese black tea. Meanwhile, young Colette stares curiously back at the signature household pet, protectively guarding her hot chocolate from a potential feline thief. As charming as it is cozy, this scene promotes the French Chocolate and Tea Company, a staple in all real—rather than overly fancy—homes. In fact, this design was so irresistible that the client used it with several text variations; this is one of the least seen versions. Imp. H. Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen Les Amoureux c. 1895 12.5 h x 9.75 w in (32 x 25 cm) For song sheet covers and the dramatic pages of Gil Blas and other publications, Steinlen created dozens of images of embracing lovers. Here, a particularly moody execution expresses the pure passion of a twilight tryst in the park. Literature: PAI-LXVII, 509 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

                  Est: $20,000 - $26,000

Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen Motocycles Comiot 1899 78 h x 53.75 w in (198 x 137 cm) Based off of models by Dion-Bouton, Comiot Cycles was a short-lived brand produced around the turn of the century. "For Comiot, Steinlen signs one of his most famous works. The machine, a motorized bicycle, is barely visible in the composition, but the sensation of speed is very present: the movement of the scarf and the long dress; the noisy flight of the frightened geese. Thanks to this engine, the young woman, though haughty, crosses the countryside with elegance and ease. In the background, Steinlen evokes... with a vigorous line a couple of peasants in the fields, bent over their hoes: one immediately thinks of the compositions of Millet or the sketches of van Gogh. The political commitment, the sensitivity of the artist, and his animal talent are reflected in the realism of this poster" (Ailes, p. 22). This is the larger, two-sheet version. Imp. Even with Steinlen's artistic diversity taken into consideration, this poster remains something of a departure from his usual warm aesthetic, and is instead reverent, enigmatic, and haunting. Imp. The publication did much to encourage fine poster design by reproducing posters, selling them in its pages, and illustrating the works of major poster artists. Measurements: 28 x 38 cm. Théophile Alexandre Steinlen was a French-Swiss painter and illustrator of the modernist period. He also worked the sculpture, both the relief and the round bulk, as well as the lithography and the photography. He was educated at the University of Lausanne, his hometown, and after finishing his studies he began working in a textile factory in Mulhouse, in the east of France. At the same time he continued to develop his talent as a painter, and finally moved to Paris on the advice of the painter François Bocion. There he joined the group of artists grouped around Le Chat Noir. There he began his career as a painter and illustrator, receiving commissions from people like Aristide Bruant. In the 1890s he began to exhibit his landscapes, vases and nudes at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. In the same decade he published his first illustrations and began to cultivate sculpture, mainly representing cat figures. From then on he collaborated regularly with the publications "Le Rire" and "Gil Blas", among others, where he published mostly satirical illustrations. He is currently represented in the Louvre and Orsay Museums in Paris, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the National Gallery in Washington D.C., the Metropolitan in New York and other important collections.
