      • M. STEINLA (1791-1858), Self-portrait by L. Cranach (1515-1586), Copper engraving
        Nov. 16, 2024

        M. STEINLA (1791-1858), Self-portrait by L. Cranach (1515-1586), Copper engraving

        Est: €75 - €125

Moritz Steinla (1791 Steinlah - 1858 Dresden): Self-portrait Lucas Cranach the Younger (1515 Wittenberg - 1586 Wittenberg), 19th century, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Lucas Cranach sich selbst gem. | M. Steinla gest.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Lucas Cranach". Date: 19th century Description: Portrait of a bearded man. Still disputed whether it is a portrait of Cranach the Younger or a self-portrait of the Elder. Person: Lucas Cranach the Younger (1515 Wittenberg - 1586 Wittenberg) Renaissance painter and portraitist. He is the son of Lucas Cranach the Elder. As a representative of a new generation, Lucas Cranach the Younger preferred figure-rich, elaborate depictions. At the same time, the seemingly orderless compositions are of surprising beauty and the colour treatment is richer than the works of his father. In Lucas Cranach the Younger's creative programme, he was the creator of the Protestants' new pictorial programme. In his work, the Mother of God Mary does not look chastely to the ground, but directly into the eyes of the viewer. Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472 Kronach - 1553 Weimar) One of the most important German painters, graphic artists and book printers of the Renaissance. From 1505 he was court painter at the Electoral Saxon court under Frederick the Wise, John the Steadfast and John Frederick the Magnanimous. In addition to numerous altarpieces and allegorical paintings, he and his workshop also produced a large number of portraits of his employers and the reformers Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon. The Cranach workshop, which is thought to have left behind around 5000 paintings, was continued by his son of the same name, Lucas Cranach the Younger. Keywords: Portrait painter, Self-portrait, Artist, Portrait, 19th century, Romanticism, Portraits, Germany, Size: Paper: 20,1 cm x 15,1 cm (7,9 x 5,9 in)
