At the age of 20, he discovered the gift to paint, which he largely ignored until the summer of 1955. At this time, he moved with his family to Brown County, Indiana, the famous art colony of the Midwest. There he studied and took art seriously, spending all of the time he could spare from his life's work of the evangelistic ministry. With the exception of a brief study with C. Curry Bohm of Nashville, Indiana, Jouiene Celfoene of Chicago, and a touch from every artist he has ever met, he has been self-taught in the school of experience. He has also learned much from his students, of whom, about 65 enrolled in one month of classes. Adolph Robert Shulz, the dean of Brown County Artists, was his most helpful critic. He estimates that he has drawn about 10,000 colored chalk pictures in his evangelistic services from coast to coast in churches, schools, clubs and other organizations.Mr. Steininger has exhibited in but one juried show, and that, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Of the 400 paintings on exhibit, he received second place with the popular vote. He was also the high seller during three seasons at the brown County Art Gallery, which is said to be next to the largest gallery in the nation owned and operated by its own artist members. His work took first place with one, and second place with another by public popular vote at the Sabado-Domingo Art Show at Santa Barbara, California.Though Mr. Steininger enjoys his painting to the fullest, he paints with sincere hope that the fruit of his brush with grace the wall of some home, and add cheer to the people who live there.
