      ALFRED STEIGLITZ (1864-1946): THE STEERAGE

      Est: $12,000 - $18,000

ALFRED STEIGLITZ (1864-1946): THE STEERAGE Large-format photogravure on cream paper, 1907, printed in 1915. 13 1/4 x 10 1/2 in. (image), 18 1/2 x 12 3/4 in. (sheet), 20 1/4 x 17 1/4 in. (frame). Notes: In June of 1907, Alfred Stieglitz sailed to Europe with his family aboard the SS Kaiser Wilhelm II to visit relatives and friends. While on a walk around the ship, Stieglitz came upon a view looking down into the lower class passenger area known as steerage. Stieglitz did not have his camera with him and quickly went back to his first class cabin to retrieve it. Having only one prepared glass plate negative, Stieglitz was able to capture this scene with one picture. This photograph has been called one of the greatest of all time, capturing in a single image a social document and presenting one of the first works of modernism in photography. Provenance: Mr. Ashton William Hawkins, Sr.
