head and shoulders portrait, framed, matted in Army blue, and glazed. Approximately 6 x 6" area visible. Randy Steffen (1917-1977) is known for his Western genre and horse images and sculptures. Admitted to West Point in 1935, Steffen traded places with a cadet at Annapolis, graduating from the Naval Academy in 1940. He served in Europe in WWII, and upon his return went to work in civil engineering. He leased a ranch in Nevada and began training horses. It was at this point he began creating art with the subject he knew best. He designed the office building for the Western Horseman magazine in 1848, worked as managing editor for another horse-related publication, worked as stunt man and stand-in for western movies, and began writing, gaining a reputation as a researcher and author. His many books focused on subjects such as the "evolution" of saddles and bits, military saddles, and the cavalry, particularly in the Indian wars. His crowning publication, which came out after his death in 1977, looked at The Horse Soldier 1776-1943.
