Oleg Stavrowsky Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1927 - d. 2020

Oleg Stavrowsky is an American painter creating loosely rendered, realistic landscape and genre paintings depicting an idealized version of the American West. Especially focused on horses, Native Americans, and cowboys, Stavrowsky’s works are made in the tradition of earlier artists like Frederic Remingston. Born in 1927 in Harlem, NY, Stavrowsky spent his early life in military service during World War II. Upon his return, he became an illustrator before focusing solely on his own artistic career. “Western painting is my life, my income, my joy, my everything,” the artist said of his oeuvre. Stavrowsky currently lives and works near Austin, TX.

        Aug. 04, 2023

Oleg Stavrowsky Painting - "The Wanderer"

        Est: $5,000 - $7,500

Oleg Stavrowsky (American, 1927-2020). "The Wanderer" oil on board, ca. 1970s-80s. Signed lower right. A striking Western painting by Oleg Stavrowsky featuring two cowboys on horseback traversing snowy terrain just beyond a grove of evergreens with a lone cow in the foreground wandering through the snowpack; this "wandering" bovine clearly inspired Stavrowsky's title "The Wanderer". The composition is impressively executed with remarkable foreshortening and photographic realism. It feels as if we are right in the scene! Stavrowsky believed that extensive experience in the field was key to capturing that "in the moment" quality. In his words, "I found that authentic western areas and activities such as ranching, riding, rodeo, etc. are absolutely essential to believable paintings…none of this can be 'faked'." A remarkable painting by Stavrowsky mounted in an attractive custom frame with a rustic quality that suits the theme perfectly. Size (sight view): 23.625" L x 35.5" W (60 cm x 90.2 cm) Size (frame): 34.5" L x 46.25" W (87.6 cm x 117.5 cm) About the artist: Born in New York to immigrant parents from Russia, Oleg Stavrowsky was born in New York to immigrant parents. Following military service in World War II, Stavrowsky created technical illustrations for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft as wall as fashion illustrations for the advertising world. However, a visit to the Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1969 catapulted him in a new direction. Stavrowksy stopped doing commercial illustrations and launched his career as a fine artist of the American West. He decided to settle in the vicinity of Austin, Texas and painted cowboys, Native Americans, and horses in the Western landscape for nearly 50 years. A painting by Oleg Stavrowksy titled "Love Letter" with a similar theme (cowboy and horse in winter) and of the same size sold with a hammer price of $7500 (Simpson's May 20, 2023 - lot #205). Provenance: private Erie, Colorado, USA collection, purchased from Trailside Galleries in Jackson, Wyoming, USA in 1981 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. (91.4 x 147.3cm) provenance: The E.M. Russell Museum, sale of March 22, 2014, lot 155. Acquired directly from the above sale to benefit the Museum. Private Collection, Colorado. NOTE: The son of Russian immigrants, Oleg Stavrowsky was born in Harlem, New York in 1927. First involved in the military, he began his career as a commercial artist, working as a newspaper fashion illustrator in the Midwest, before discovering Western Art after a visit to the National Cowboy and Western heritage Museum in Oklahoma, which propelled him to embrace a full-time independent artistic career. 'Western painting is my life, my income, my joy, my everything,' the artist said of his oeuvre. Stavrowsky lived and worked near Austin, Texas until his recent passing at age 93 in May 2020. The present work as well as the following (Lot 36) are quintessential paintings by the artist. Both are captured in a loose, yet realistic manner, which depicts a glorified vision of the American West, capitalizing on feelings of vitality and adventure.
