Staniforth (Joseph Morewood, 1863-1921). The investiture of Prince Edward as Prince of Wales at Caernarfon Castle, 13th July 1911, an original pencil and watercolour drawing of the ceremony within the Castle interior with onlooking crowds and an open sky, signed 'J.M. Staniforth' lower left, 40 x 61 cm (16 x 24.5 ins), framed and glazed This picture was commissioned by David Lloyd George in 1911 to commemorate the investiture of Prince Edward as Prince of Wales, (later to become King Edward VIII), at Caernarfon Castle. Lloyd George was Constable of Caernarfon Castle and MP for the local constituency. It was his idea to hold the investiture at Caernarfon Castle as a means of popularising royalty in Wales and quelling Welsh nationalism. The only other investiture of the Prince of Wales at the Caernarfon Castle was for the ceremony of Prince Charles in 1969. The picture remained with Lloyd George all his life, hanging in his study. After his death it remained with his daughter, Megan, at the family home Ty Newydd, Llanystumdy near Criccieth where Lloyd George spent his last years. Upon Megan Lloyd George's death the estate was dispersed at auction whereby the present owner purchased it. Joseph Morewood Staniforth was a Welsh editorial cartoonist who worked for the Western Mail and Evening Express, and is considered one of the most important visual commentators of Welsh affairs. (1)
