        Paul Stahr (1883-1953), "Be Patriotic, Sign Your Country's Pledge to Save the Food", 1916-1920, gouache lithograph, sight: 28.5 x 21", frame: 30.75 x 23.5" Provenance: the Estate of Nancye Miller A copy of this print is in the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Typical of many propaganda posters of the era, Paul Stahr's "Be Patriotic" aims to be spiritually uplifting and show the ideals for which we were fighting. The female persona of the United States, Columbia, is featured in this poster, her dress and liberty cap made from the American Flag. This 29" x 21" poster was printed by the W. F. Powers Company of New York, and is labeled "No. 4." Paul C. Stahr, was a noted illustrator, who contributed to Harper's Bazaar, American Magazine, Argosy, Collier's Weekly, Woman's Home Companion and other magazines. During World War I, he did a poster for Herbert Hoover's food campaign for the Belgians, the original of which is now in the National Archives in Washington. He was born in Philadelphia and studied at the National Academy of Design, and was a student of John Ward.  Mr. Stahr was a member of the Society of Illustrators. He retired in 1943.

Foldmarks, pinholes to corners, 1 1/2 inch vertical closed tear to lower center, 1/2 inch open tears to upper corners on top margin, 1 inch closed tear along horizontal foldmark to right side, fingerprint top right, some letters writtin in to upper right quadrant.
