ROBYN STACEY (born 1952) Martin Sharp's Eternity, Wirian Bellevue Hill 2016 c-type print, ed. 3/5 110 x 195cm (sheet); 114 x 199cm (frame) PROVENANCE: Jan Manton Gallery, Sydney Private collection, Melbourne, acquired from the above in 2019 EXHIBITIONS: Robyn Stacey, Dark Wonder, Stills Gallery, Sydney, 8 October - 5 November 2016 (another example) OTHER NOTES: The sculpture 'Eternity' was the final artwork created by Martin Sharp (1942-2013) and is captured here in a unique photograph by Sydney-based artist Robyn Stacey. Taken in Sharp's Bellevue Hill home, Wirrian, the image employs Stacey's distinct camera obscura technique. Stacey's practice, explored in her series 'Dark Wonder,' revives the centuries-old method of camera obscura by blacking out a room's windows, allowing a single pinhole of light to project an inverted, reversed view of the outside world onto the walls within. This view, seen from Sharp's home, adds a haunting presence to his final work.

      Est: $1,000 - $2,000

ROBYN STACEY (born 1952) Sideswipe I 1990 (All the Sounds of Fear 1990) cibachrome print, ed. 2/3 signed, editioned, dated and titled verso (concealed) 40 x 60cm (sheet, reveal) PROVENANCE: The Artist's Studio Private collection, Melbourne OTHER NOTES: "Stacey's approach to photography is more akin to a painter or a printmaker, building up the image like layering oil paint or manipulating marks on an etching plate. The models for works in the series were friends of the artist, and first shot on black and white film. The montaged images were then printed on matte paper and hand coloured, then rephotographed onto a transparency and printed as a glossy Cibachrome. Stacey works in series, often exploring a concept over a number of years. To each new project she brings careful investigation by accumulating specialist knowledge. Her compositions are highly constructed, and informed by history, science, literature and screen culture. She gives equal weight and care to each subject - whether an entomological specimen, a still life of colonial glassware, or an architectural view constructed by a camera obscura. Stacey manipulates the still photographic image into a hum of suspense, as the works mark a threshold between audience and unknown performance". (Excerpt from the Know My Name publication, 2020, Alice Clanachan, Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide) Another impression of the print is currently held in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
