PHOEBE STABLER (BRITISH 1879-1955) FOR HAMMERSMITH POTTERY THE LAVENDER WOMAN, DESIGNED 1911 glazed stoneware, incised 'STABLER 1911' (48cm (18 7/8in) high) Note: This is an early figure by Stabler, produced at her studio in Hammersmith which she shared with her husband Harold. Stabler later made designs for the Ashtead Pottery and the firm Carter, Stabler & Adams (later Poole Pottery) in which her husband was a partner.

Phoebe Stabler (1879-1955), ▴ Phoebe Stabler (1879-1955), 'Garden Fairy', bronze, raised on a chamfered stone plinth, unsigned, 67cm high An identical figure is in the Scarborough Art Gallery. Phoebe Stabler (1879-1955) was a sculptor in stone, metal and terracotta, a ceramicist and artist who early on exhibited under her maiden name, Phoebe McLeish. She was educated at Liverpool University and, having won a travelling scholarship, attended the Royal College of Art under Richard Garbe, Édouard Lantéri and Augustus John. She exhibited widely including RA, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, SWA, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and RMS, and was a fellow of the RBS. In 1906, Phoebe married the artist Harold Stabler, and subsequently, having developed a series of pottery figures with rich glazes, these were first fired at a commercial pottery, then in a kiln in their London garden. Royal Worcester, Royal Doulton, and especially Poole Pottery in Dorset, produced the figures. Phoebe was also involved in war memorials for Durban and Rugby School, garden sculpture for the Paris Exhibition and a fountain for the Bank of England. Phoebe’s sister, Minnie McLeish, was one of the designers the Stablers introduced to Poole Pottery. Condition Report: Some chips to the edge of the plinth. Patina good.

Possibly repair to one side by the chin into the neck, but may have been before coloured. Some rubbing and loss to colour.
