Ipswich, England, 1893-1979 Three Country Works: 1) A Little Black Barn in Suffolk (etching print by Russell); and two unnamed works by unknown artists: 2) Preliminary Sketch (pencil & chalk) of the Outdoors, 3) Watercolor of a European Village from Nearby Hillside Etching 1) This etching was one of 350 made for the 1929 Print Makers Society of California. It depicts a barn and various other farm house buildings, some men chatting, and some tall trees in Suffolk, England. The print is in its original jacket with its 1929 description of the work. Signed in pencil by the artist. 2) Outdoor Preliminary Sketch drawn on brown paper, presumably by a well-known British artist, Hasketh Hubbard (1892-1957; his name is written on pencil on the back of the drawing). 3) Unknown artist. Fine black/ white/ grey watercolor view of a 19th c. European town as seen from a nearby hillside. The town includes some large buildings and what appear to be the roofs of many small buildings and a relatively large church bell tower.

By the 1960s they were the largest jigsaw puzzle makers in the world. In 1969 the Leeds-based games manufacturer Waddingtons bought the business, probably with the aim of removing a competitor from the market. The following seven lots (1-7) are all original watercolours commissioned in the 1960s by the then art director of Tower Press, Harry Bass. They were most likely concept pieces intended to be made into jigsaw puzzles.
