JOHN (JACK) ROBERT CHARLES SPURLING (UK, 1870-1933) "The Whaling Barque 'Active', Dundee", built 1852, lost 1916, oil on linen, signed lower right, titled on frame tag, atree quarter stern view, with rendering stack running, under sparse sail; housed in a carved gilt frame with linen liner, OS: 24" x 28", SS: 17 1/2" x 21 1/2". Having an incredibly long working life of 64 years, her timbers were clad with Scottish oak up to 5 inches thick much of this overclad with greenheart up to 3 inches thick. In 1871 she underwent a major refit during which she was converted to steam screw propulsion. it was said "No ship afloat has taken more whales from the Arctic region than the Active". She foundered somewhere close to Odiness Bay on Christmas Day 1915, under the burden of a too-great load of war material, in a sudden gale, with the loss of all hands.

It was torpedoed on April 28th 1917 by a German U-boat and sank with the loss of 14 crew. From a Private Collection Not inspected out of the frame - signs of discolouring of the paper, particularly in the clouds and sails. Also signs of some light foxing in the sky. The frame is discoloured commensurate with age and the glass requires cleaning.

In 1881, a 10 year old, living at 27 Compton Terrace, Islington, London with his parents, 50 year old Charles, who was born at Shotley, Suffolk which may have given the aspiring artist his first contact with ships and the sea, and 51 year old mother Mary, who was born at St Pancras, with four siblings, Bessie Matilda 16, Lottie Ellen 14, Louie Maria 12 and Charles Andrew 7, all born at Hackney. Before his marriage, Jack occupied much of his time by sketching ships in the East India Docks at Blackwall and first went to sea at 16, on board the ship 'Astoria', with a cargo of coal bound for Shanghai. He suffered a fateful fall and ended up hospitalised in China, where he took to his passion of painting ships. The downtime provided him with the opportunity to earn a second mate's certificate and he joined the Blue Anchor Line as a junior officer with whom he remained for seven years. He married at Brentford, Middlesex in 1893, actress Helena Alice Emma Humble (1869-1952) and obtained work as an actor in George Edwards' musical productions whilst continuing with his painting as a hobby. His ship portraits came to the attention of Frederick Hook, editor of the nautical magazine 'The Blue Peter', the initial selection of paintings proved an immediate success and Spurling was commissioned for more works for the magazine over a number of years. Another contributor to 'The Blue Peter' was author Basil Lubbock (1876-1944) and together they wrote a series of commercial sailing books. John Robert Charles Spurling was of Lake View, Stock Road, Billericay, Essex when he died on 24 October 1933. He is related to the Shotley painter 'Jack' John Henry Forster Spurling.

The novelist, Joseph Conrad served as her third mate and referred to her in his novel "Mirror of the Seas": "The ship was one of those iron wood clippers that the Clyde had floated out in swarms upon the world during the seventh decade of the last century. It was a fine period in shipbuilding and also, I might say, a period of overmasting. The spars rigged up on the narrow hulls were indeed tall then, and the ship of which I think, with her colored-glass skylight-ends bearing the motto, 'Let Glasgow Flourish,' was certainly one of the most heavily-sparred specimens. She was built for hard driving, and unquestionably she got all the driving she could stand." C

Footnotes Literature Warren Moore, Spurling, Sail and Steam, Patrick Stephens Ltd., (Cambridge, 1980), p.37-44, illustrated, p.39 "Then straightaway we left them in grief to complain, Whilst we are carousing along the sail main, Pray God bless our fleet and his majesty too, And grant them success wherever they go Concluding as this, and my song to end, In Matthew's brave ship these verses were penned." Old Song, 'Admiral Matthew's Engagement', Namur, off Toulon 1744. Named after a town in Belgium which was considered a place of great strategic importance during the latter part of the 17th century, Namur was originally launched at Woolwich in 1697, before being taken to pieces and her remains sent to Depford for rebuilding at a cost of £29,403. At her re-launch in 1729, Namur was registered as a 2nd rate of 1,567 tons with 90 guns. Her active service before being rebuilt was largely contained to the War of the Spanish Succession under the command of Captain Christopher Myngs, where she was present at the capture of Gibraltar and the Battle of Velez-Malaga. In May 1731, she sailed for Cadiz as the flagship of Admiral Sir Charles Wager under Captain Edward Falkingham. Wager's mission was to assist the Marquis de Mari in conveying Spanish troops from Barcelona to Leghorn. Upon achieving these aims, Namur sailed back to port. With brief stints in Portugal and Spain between 1732 and 1740, Namur returned home and was laid up until 1741, when she was appointed to the Mediterranean fleet under Captain S. Cornish until being recalled to England in 1744. By January 1745, Namur had been cut down and razeed to 74-guns, joining the Western Squadron under Captain Honourable Edward Boscawen where, on 3 May 1797, she was involved in the First Battle of Finisterre capturing all but two French ships and £300,000 in prizes. On 29 May, the greater part of the ship's company began to mutiny. This was quickly suppressed and a court-martial held on 2 July where, out of 45 suspected, three were hanged and twelve whipped. On 19 July, Captain Marshall took command and sailed to the East Indies with orders to attempt a reduction in St. Lucia. This failed and the Namur sailed on to Fort St. David. Leaving briefly for a refit, on her return she was wrecked in a gale on 14 April 1749, with all 520 crew members perishing with their ship.

Lock and launched on 14 April 1759, Sandwich was registered as a 2nd rate of 1,869 tons originally with 90 guns before a refit in 1779, after which she is recorded as having 98. She measured 176 feet in length with a 49.5 foot beam. Built three years into the Seven Years War, upon completion she was immediately dispatched to Ushant where she joined the Western Squadron under Captain Sir E. Hawke. She was primarily involved with forming a blockade against the French until 1762, when she was returned to Portsmouth to be paid off and refitted. In 1775, active operations commenced against rebel states of North America and Sandwich was employed to duty under the flag of Admiral Sir J. Douglas. With the recognition of US independence by the French government in 1778, she was then sailed to the channel in preparation for impending war. After a further refit in 1799-80, at the cost of £15,396, Sandwich sailed under Admiral Rodney. Whilst escorting a fleet of supply ships to relieve the Spanish siege of Gibraltar with a fleet of 20 ships of the line they encountered Langara's squadron south of Cape St. Vincent. The ensuing battle lasted from midday to midnight with the British capturing four Spanish ships, including Langara's flagship. Following this, Sandwich sailed on to St. Lucia and remained there until a journey to New York in August 1780, where she stayed until the October when she sailed to Barbados. Returning to Chatham in 1787, she was commissioned as a guardship under Captain Thomas Tonkin until 1791, when she was sent to the Nore as a guard and receiving ship during more hostility with France. It was at this time that Sandwich was involved in the Mutiny of the Nore where on 12 May 1797, her crew seized control of the ship and elected seaman Richard Parker 'President of the Delegates of the Fleet'. When the mutiny failed, Parker was convicted of treason and piracy and hanged from the ship's yardarm. Sandwich was paid off in September 1797, and re-commissioned again to resume her duty as a guardship, a duty she continued until April 1810, when she was docked and taken to pieces.

His first contact with the sea and shipping was through his father's business as an importer of jute. As a youth in London he spent much time drawing ships in the East India Docks. When he reached age 17 he went to sea as an apprentice for 7 years. When he returned to shore he first worked as an actor but continued painting as a sideline. His ship paintings came to the attention of the editor of the nautical magazine The Blue Peter and he received regular commissions. This also led to his collaboration with Basil Lubbock, a maritime author who also contributed to The Blue Peter, on his series of books on commercial sailing ships.

JOHN ROBERT CHARLES SPURLING (BRITISH, 1870-1967) THE VICTORY GOING INTO ACTION signed l.l and inscribed with the artist's hand 'The Victory going into action, 1805; the first shot at Trafalgar falling short of the port bow of The Victory"; watercolour 19cm x 17cm; 7 1/2in x 6 3/4in John (better known as Jack) Spurling was born in Suffolk. His first contact with the sea and shipping was through his father's business as an importer of jute. As a youth in London he spent much time drawing ships in the East India Docks.
