Sprosse 1852". Ausgebildet an der Leipziger Akademie hielt sich Sprosse von 1844 bis 1850 in Rom auf. Hier stand er in freundschaftlichem Kontakt zu Martin von Wagner und Johann Christian Reinhart, der über Sprosse äußerte, daß "nach Piranesi keiner die römischen Ruinen so wahr, malerisch und künstlerisch vollendet dargestellt habe [wie er]" (Andresen).
