          Hans Springinklee (1490-1527) - The Nativity

          Rare and early Nativity scene by Hans Spring, famous painter and designer of woodcuts, pupil of Dürer living in his house for a while. Wee see three putti playing with the Christ Child; the Virgin kneeling and St Joseph inside a ruined building; two shepherds approaching . The woodcut was made by Springinklee in 1519 and published by Anton Koberger on 24 July 1521. (in the Vulgate edition printed by J. Sacon in Lyon). Springinklee was not only a pupil by Dürer but he also followed the style of his master in detail. Signed with his monogram HSK bottom left.

Hans Springinklee war ein Nachfolger Albrecht Dürers, dessen Einfluss in der vorliegenden Darstellung voll zur Geltung kommt. Er arbeitete in dessen Werkstatt und war auch an den Arbeiten zur Ehrenpforte Kaiser Maximilians I. beteiligt. - Aus der von J. Sacon in Lyon für Koberger gedruckten Vulgata von 1519. Mit dem lateinischen Text auf der Rückseite. Ausgezeichneter Druck mit sehr feinem Rändchen um die Einfassung, oben partiell an diese geschnitten.           HANS SPRINGINKLEE The Nativity. Woodcut, 1519. 206x177 mm; 8 1/8x7 inches, narrow to thread margins. A very good, evenly-printed impression. Springinklee (1495-1540) was a follower of Albrecht Dürer. He was an accomplished book illustrator and assisted Dürer with numerous projects including the monumental 192-panel woodcut triumphal arch created for Emperor Maximilian I in the late 1510s.
