      Semi-Nude Seated Red Hair Girl with flowers in her hair, looking intently at the viewer, pastel on grey board, signed and inscribed "To Francis Sturgis", in modern gold cove frame with linen liner, under glass, OS: 28" x 22", SS: 23 1/2" x 17 1/2". Good condition. Spear was the son of Brig Gen Ellis Spear, 1st Lt to Joshua Chamberlain and leader of the famous bayonet charge of the 20th Maine at Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg. The Ellis house still stands in Warren, Maine.

      Two (2) Arthur Prince Spear (Massachusetts/California/District Of Columbia, 1879-1959) offset prints after pencil and gouache drawings, including one (1) depicting a young woman with bobbed hair in a short dress. Signed "Arthur Spear" in pencil, lower right. Housed in a giltwood frame; and one (1) depicting a male youth in billowing classical garb standing on a naturalistic base with a bow held aloft in his right hand. Signed "Arthur Spear" in pencil, lower right under image. Housed and matted under glass in a wooden frame. Sights range in size from 19 1/2" H x 13" W to 20" H x 14 1/8" W. Frames range in size from 21 3/8" H x 14 3/4" W to 24 3/4" H x 18 3/8" W. Mid 20th century. Provenance: The items included in this lot and Lot 663 are believed to have been gifts from Spear to family members of Ruth Norton White, daughter of Edward Little, subject of the painting in Lot 133.

      Two (2) Arthur Prince Spear (Massachusetts/California/District Of Columbia, 1879-1959) offset prints, including one (1) after his oil painting titled "Sunrise", 1921, depicting three water nymphs surrounded by fish lifting the sun from the water towards the early morning horizon. Signed "Arthur Spear" in pencil, lower right under image. Second lithograph is after Spear's pastel drawing titled "The Swing", 1921, depicting a young woman in a flowing dress on a swing against a naturalistic background. Inscribed and signed "To Alice Arthur Spear" in pencil, lower right in the image. Ink stamp with date "Sept 8 1953" with framing gallery label, en verso. Both housed under glass in black wooden frames. Sights ranging in size from 14 5/8" H x 19 3/8" W to 26 3/4" H x 20" W. Frames range in size from 20 1/2" H x 25" W to 28 1/2" H x 22" W. Mid 20th century. Provenance: The items included in this lot and Lot 664 are believed to have been gifts from Spear to family members of Ruth Norton White, daughter of Edward Little, subject of the painting in Lot 133.       Arthur Spear (American 1879 - 1959) Signed lower right. oil on board. Sight Size: 30.5 x 25.5 in. Overall Size: 38.5 x 33.5 in. Born in Washington, DC on Sept. 23, 1879. Spear studied at George Washington University, ASL of NYC, and Académie Julian in Paris. While in California in 1927, he painted on the Mendocino coast and was active in southern California. He held memberships in the Boston Art Club; National Academy of Design, 1920; the St. Botolf's Club; the Allied Artists of America; the Guild of Boston Artists; and the Copley Society. Spear's exhibitions and awards include a medal at the Pan-American Exposition of 1915; a prize at the National Academy of Design in 1921; the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; the Corcoran Gallery of Art; and the Boston Art Club in 1908. Institutions representing Spear's work include the Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, MA; and the Ellwood House Museum in Dekalb, IL.
