Frank Southgate, RBA (1872-1916) Pink-footed Geese at Holkham Marshes signed 'Frank Southgate' (lower right) watercolour on paper 22.5 x 33.5cm Provenance: Mandell's Gallery, Norwich Exhibited: Great Yarmouth, Great Yarmouth Museums, Frank Southgate R.B.A., 15th September - 4th October 1986, no.28 Edward Frank Southgate was born in August 1872 and grew up in Hunstanton. Following his brief studies at the Slade School and training under Sir Arthur Cope, Southgate started contributing pictures to The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News and illustrated numerous natural history and travel books. He became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1905, where he exhibited between 1904 and 1912. In his early works, he appears to have drawn in the studio from stuffed birds, whilst his mature works show greater naturalism and evidence of working from nature. He had a passion for wildfowling which gave him a great knowledge of his subject. He enjoyed the patronage of the 2nd Lord Montagu of Beaulieu who provided him with a studio. At the outbreak of WWI, he joined the Sportsman's Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He died in February 1916 after running two miles to a front line position and is buried in Northern France. 45.5 x 57cm framed Not examined out of its frame.
