Elli Sougioltzoglou-Seraidari Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1899 - d. 1998

Nelly studied photography in Germany, alongside the great classic photographer Hugo Erfurt and later, Franz Fiedler. She was initiated into the new approach in photography and European Ne?-Romanticism.

She began her first studio in Ermou street, Athens in 1924. Her lens captured important personalities and themes of the time. These included the famous dancer of Opera Comique Mona Paeva, (shot dancing nude at the Parthenon), Eva Sikelianou, Dimitris Mitropoulos, (principal conductor of the Metropolitan Opera of New York) and scenes of the Delphic Festival.

Her avant-garde pictures of nude Mona Paeva at the Parthenon were published by the French magazine Illustration de Paris and caused a scandal in the small city of Athens at the time. She was defended by Pavlos Nirvanas in his column in Elefthero Vima newspaper (May 1929).

Her classical education and admiration of Ancient Greek civilization influenced her photographic work on the Acropolis. These images have come to define the artist and have also played a part in the history of photography and architecture.

During World War II she went to the United States, where she stayed for twenty seven years. The Metropolitan Museum of New York bought a large series of her Acropolis photographs.

In 1966 she returned to Greece and presented her work in numerous exhibitions, the last being ‘Nelly’s: The Body, the Light and Ancient Greece’, which was the official Greek participation in the Cultural Olympiad of Barcelona in 1992.

      Elli Seraidari (Nelly's) (1899-1998)

      Est: €100 - €200

Elli Seraidari (Nelly's) (1899-1998), photography, 30 x 23 cm. Notes: Unsigned, it bears Nelly's ink stamp on the reverse. Small wear due to age. Unframed. Born in Anatolia in 1899, in 1920 Nelly (née Elli Souyoultzoglou) moved to Germany, escaping from the destruction of her homeland in the wake of the First World War. In Dresden she originally studied art but then switched to photography, first studying under the leading portrait photographer Hugo Erfurth and then under Franz Fiedler, a former student of Erfurth's. It was through working in Fiedler's studio that she came to specialise in dance photography. In 1923 Nelly assisted Fiedler with studies taken en plein-air of dancers from the Mary Wigman school of expressive dance. This avant-garde dance movement, originally known as 'artistic dance', equated freedom of movement with freedom of spirit. Dancers performed barefoot and with loose-flowing clothing. When Nelly returned to Greece and, in 1925, opened her own studio in Athens, she continued with her dance photography to controversial effect. The exultant pose of the Hungarian dancer and musicologist Nikolska in this image taken in 1929 is both a tribute to expressive dance and an exuberant response to Nelly's first series of dance photographs, taken on the Acropolis in 1927 and published two years later in the French journal L'Illustration, were identified by some as a desacration of this historic site. Nelly's 'atelier artistique' (from which this print was issued) was at 18 Rue d'Hermès in Athens. French was the language used by the upper classes in Athens at this time.
