      George Sottung (1927 - 1999) Operation Crossroads

      Est: $100 - $1,000

George Sottung (American, 1927 - 1999) "Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll - "Able" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32+8c "Able" stamp issued July 1, 1996. On July 1, 1946, the first of many nuclear tests was performed at Bikini Atoll. Codenamed "Able," this atomic explosion was comparable to those that occurred at Hiroshima and Nagasaki a year earlier. A B-29 -- Dave's Dream -- piloted by Major Woodrow P. Swancutt, was to drop the bomb over the battleship Nevada, moored in the center of the target array. Deployed at 9:00 a.m., the bomb exploded at the correct altitude of 500 feet, but it was off-target by about 2,000 feet and detonated above the attack transport Gilliam. The explosion sank five large vessels and damaged a number of others. The incredible blast generated extremely hot temperatures and created a shock wave that traveled with an initial velocity of more than a mile a second. A gaseous ball of fire rose, creating a mushroom cloud that reached a height of more than 8,000 feet in only 30 seconds. As the cloud cooled, condensed water that had been absorbed into the cloud or vaporized by the explosion created a light, radioactive rain over Bikini. Image Size: 12.5 x 16.75 in. Overall Size: 16.5 x 20.75 in. Unframed. (B15406)

George Sottung (American, 1927 - 1999) "Tourism Site in Pohnpei - Sokehs Rock" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Federated States of Micronesia First Day Cover for the 29c Tourism Sites of Pohnpei stamp issued October 5, 1993. Known as the "Diamond Head of Micronesia," Sokehs Rock rises 662 feet over Pohnpei's harbor. A natural beacon for seagoing vessels, this impressive promontory beckons visitors to scale its basalt face. Those who reach the top are rewarded with a magnificent vista of Sokehs Island and the rest of Pohnpei. In 1977, an adventurous soul attempted to fly his hang-glider from the top of Sokehs Rock, destined for either Takatik Island or a nearby causeway. Just as he became airborne, the winds abruptly changed course, slamming the unsuspecting pilot and his craft against the face of the rock. Fortunately the flyer recovered from this mishap and today his experience serves as a caution to thrill-seekers contemplating leaps of their own. Less daring tourists opt for a relaxing boat ride that offers several dramatic views of the majestic rock. In addition to its prominence as a point of interest, Sokehs Rock also played a role in Pohnpei's history. In 1910, dissidents fled to the top of the rock seeking refuge from German government troops during the Sokehs Rebellion, Pohnpei's last battle against foreign rule. Image Size: 19.25 x 25 in. Overall Size: 22 x 30 in. Unframed. (B14533)

George Sottung (American, 1927 - 1999) "Malcolm X" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 33c Malcolm X stamp issued January 20, 1999. On May 19, 1925, Malcolm Little was born in Omaha, Nebraska. When he was six years old, his father was murdered by white vigilantes. Dropping out of eighth grade, Malcolm turned to street crime and at the age of 21 was arrested for burglary and sentenced to prison. During this period Malcolm was greatly influenced by the teachings of Elijah Muhammad, leader of the Lost-Found Nation of Islam or Black Muslims. He emerged from his seven years of incarceration with a newfound sense of purpose and a name that reflected this. Believing his surname was a legacy of slavery, Malcolm replaced it with an "X" in honor of his lost African heritage. After meeting with Muhammad, Malcolm was placed in charge of Mosque No. 7 in New York, where his fiery charisma, high intelligence and eloquent oratorical skills won him many followers. He preached that black people should separate themselves culturally, politically, physically and psychologically from white Western civilization. After making a pilgrimage to Mecca, however, Malcolm changed his views on race relations and adopted a more tolerant stance. On March 8, 1964, Malcolm severed his ties with the Nation of Islam. Three months later, he established the Organization of Afro-American Unity to promote black equality without separation from the white community. On February 21, 1965, Malcolm was fatally shot while preparing to give a speech. Today, his maxims of self-reliance, self-respect and economic empowerment continue to be an inspiration for many Americans. Image Size: 15.25 x 13.25 in. Overall Size: 22.25 x 20 in. Unframed. In addition to breathtaking scenery, mountains have a major impact on the climate and state of civilization in the regions in which they are found. Mountains catch prevailing winds, and terrain on the windward side of mountains receives plentiful rainfall, while terrain on the leeward side is more arid. The colder climate of mountainous areas is less conducive to large human populations or agriculture, and therefore mountain habitats produce a diversity of flora and fauna. Their tundra regions provide short grazing grasses which feed wild goats and sheep, while mountain ponds teem with fish, beaver and marten. The coniferous forests provide safe havens for birds, squirrels and deer while furnishing through photosyntheses rich supplies of life-giving oxygen. Mountains and their surrounding terrain provide some of Earth's most majestic vistas, support a variety of wildlife and remain vitally important to the planet's environmental health. George Sottung (American, 1927 - 1999) "Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll - "Baker"" Signed lower left. Original oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32+8c "Baker" stamp issued July 1, 1996. The first underwater nuclear test occurred when the "Baker" bomb was detonated on July 25, 1946, at Bikini Atoll. The primary objective of this test was to analyze the effect of a nuclear explosion on naval vessels. Outdated U.S. Navy ships and captured German and Japanese World War II vessels were brought into Bikini lagoon. Encased in a watertight steel caisson, the bomb was suspended 90 feet below the landing ship LSM-60. Radio signals from a command ship closed circuits that armed and then detonated the bomb at 8:45 a.m. A massive column of steam and water erupted from the lagoon, and the explosion created a series of huge waves that struck the target ships. Less than a second after detonation, the first wave -- more than 90 feet high -- crashed into the Carrier Saratoga and the Battleship Arkansas. The Saratoga was swept 800 yards from its mooring point and sank eight hours after the explosion. The Arkansas sank almost immediately, as did the submarines Pilotfish, Apogon, Shipjack and the fuel barge YO-160. Image Size: 13.75 x 16 in. Overall Size: 17.25 x 21 in. Unframed. (B15407)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Louis Armstrong stamp issued September 1, 1995. If Jack Armstrong was the "all-American boy," Louis Armstrong certainly deserves the title "all-American musician." The jazz trumpeter and singer nicknamed "Satchmo" (a shortened form of "Satchel Mouth") was born in New Orleans in 1900 or 1901 and moved to Chicago in 1922. It wasn't long before Armstrong had set the conventional blues and jazz establishment on its proverbial ear. Forsaking the traditional New Orleans sound that saw trumpet, clarinet and trombone playing second fiddle to the needs of a larger ensemble, Armstrong's innovative style stressed individual virtuosity and became the rage among blues aficionados. But Armstrong's talents didn't end with his personal mastery of the trumpet. He's credited with creating "scat" vocals, where the human voice is used in place of instruments to improvise melody without uttering actual words. "Satchmo" even sang tunes with real words like Hello Dolly!, which in 1964 displaced the Beatles from the top spot on the list of best-selling recordings. Armstrong also appeared in other Hollywood movies including Pennies from Heaven, The Glenn Miller Story and High Society. In his later years, popular around the world, Armstrong became an unofficial ambassador for the U.S. State Department, performing in various Eastern Bloc nations and in Africa to the delight of millions. Derived from the term "blue note," a flatted third or seventh note in a chord where a major interval would be expected, the Blues is an offshoot of pre-Civil War ballads of work and sorrow. Eventually the music acquired a recognizable pattern characterized by a slow tempo and mournful melody. Among those credited with perpetuating the Blues are Ma Rainey, Billy Holiday, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters. Jazz, another form of music that originated in America, was first played in the United States during the late 1800s. One of its most distinctive attributes is the use of improvisation, allowing singers and musicians to spontaneously perform their own versions of small segments of a Jazz song. Recording artists Mildred Bailey and Bessie Smith are just two of the pioneers who made great strides in the development of this truly American form of music. Image Size: 15 x 13.25 in.
