Giovanni Sottocornola, Milano 1855 - 1917 (Milan 1855 - 1917) - - Giovanni Sottocornola, born in Milan on August 1, 1855, came from humble beginnings and, left fatherless, enrolled at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in 1875. During this period, influenced by Divisionism, he painted portraits and still lifes. Italian culture was undergoing a period of change, and Sottocornola joined a group of innovators who saw pointillism as a way of technical and linguistic renewal.In the early 1880s, the artist executed pointillist works, but his attention to social themes grew in the following years. In 1886, at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, he presented "Frutera," evidence of his transition from academic influences to social realism. An interest in labor became central to his production, but without overtly denunciatory intent.The decade between 1888 and the cannonades of Bava Beccaris (1898) was Sottocornola's most creative period, evidenced by his participation in the 1891 Brera Triennale. There he exhibited pointillist works such as "Outside the Door" and "The Mason." His painting embraced an "ideist pointillism," influenced by Segantini and Previati, with a bold focus on social themes.His attention to women's labor, evident in works such as "The Women Workers" and "Chattering on Corso Garibaldi," characterized his output.
