        George W. Sotter (1879-1953) American

        Est: $4,500 - $6,500

George W. Sotter (1879-1953) Oil on canvas, signed lower right "G.W. Sotter", piece measures 16 x 20 and 22.5 x 27 inches w/frame. Born in Pittsburgh in 1879 to Nicholas and Katherine Sotter, George William Sotter painted the rivers and mills of that city in his early youth. He apprenticed with several stained-glass studios there prior to becoming a partner in the studio of Horace Rudy in Pittsburgh around 1901. He took leave from the studio and came to Bucks County in 1902, to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as well as with Edward W. Redfield, the premier painter of the New Hope School. In 1903, he participated in the annual exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He continued his studies at the Academy from 1905 – 1907 under William Merritt Chase and Thomas Anshutz. George William Sotter lived in Holicong, Pennsylvania, near New Hope, in a converted 19th Century stone barn. There, in his studio, he painted landscape scenes of Bucks County, which link Sotter to the New Hope School of American Impressionism, and fashioned stained glass windows that remain extant in cathedrals, churches, and monasteries throughout the country. In 1907, he married artist Alice E. Bennett of Pittsburgh, whom he first met at the Rudy Brothers Stained Glass Studio. On an extended wedding trip abroad, the couple studied and painted throughout Europe. For nine years, Sotter taught design and painting at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, before moving permanently to their historic home in Holicong in 1919. He traveled and painted in Europe and in New England, particularly in Rockport, Maine. He opened his own stained-glass studio and he earned a national reputation making windows for churches and monasteries. Lauded for his marine pictures and dramatic landscapes with cloud-filled skies, Sotter was particularly recognized for painting winter night scenes, and consistently won the favorite painting ballot (cast by his artist colleagues) at the fall exhibitions at Phillips Mill in New Hope. The artist died in 1953.

Acquired directly from the above. Private Collection, Pennsylvania. Lot Essay Although he started his career as a stained glass artist in Pittsburgh, George Sotter is best known for his poetic winter nocturne scenes, in which he featured quaint hamlets or solitary houses blanketed in the snow, nearby a river or a forest, and bathed in a soothing moonlight, as depicted here.  Acquired directly from the artist, A Light in the Window is a quintessential canvas depicting a solitary stone barn in a winter field at night. Rendered in a particularly large format, the painting shows a small light twinkling through the window–the only sign of a human presence in this otherwise quiet décor, which adds a sense of narrative and mystery to the scene. Executed at the peak of Sotter's painting career, likely from nature, the present work is set near the artist's own home and studio in Holicong, Pennsylvania, amidst the "tranquil tenor, beautiful stone houses and rolling hills of Bucks County" to which Sotter was first introduced in 1902 by fellow Pennsylvania Impressionist, Edward Redfield, who took the artist under his wing and invited him to become his student at his home in Centre Bridge.  With its thick impasto, quick impressionistic touch and impactful composition, A Light in the Window reveals the great influence of Redfield on Sotter's work. The viewer is invited to enter the picture plane through the projected oblique shadows at left, and through the rolling terrain which leads to the barn. Captured in a restricted palette of blues, purples and grays, the picture offers a vision of stillness which goes beyond the mere recording of a tranquil country night, as it distills a sense of nostalgia, and even mysticism, that speaks to the artist's inner personality.  Few American artists painted night subjects as regularly as Sotter, who is said to have produced hundreds of works of that type. Contrary to James Abbott McNeill Whistler's nocturnes which were voluntarily loose and obscure abstract landscapes difficult to decipher, Sotter's moonlight paintings aimed at a certain clarity and showed a sense of detail, as if the viewer could see in plain sight. Such works generated incredible interest among the artist's collectors and critics, who cherished them for their romantic touch and deeper significance.

George William Sotter (American, 1879–1953) Miner Hillard Milling Company, Miners Mills, PA Signed 'G.W. Sotter' bottom right; also titled verso, oil on Masonite 22 7/8 x 31 7/8 in. (58.1 x 81cm) Provenance Private Collection, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania Note Already an established designer of stained glass, Sotter settled in Bucks County in 1919 where, for the remainder of his career, he documented the region’s picturesque landscape and the buildings that graced it. The present painting depicts the Miner Hillard Milling Company plant, historic landmark of the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Sotter’s familiarity with—and ostensible affection for—industrial architecture is on full display in the nearly 23 x 32-inch canvas. The stately, four-story flour mill is silhouetted by a star-spangled night sky and the timbered foothills of the Pocono Mountains. The buildings, with rhythmic, fenestrated façades, occupy the middleground of the composition; railroad tracks striate a blanket of downy snow, at once converging at and directing viewers' gaze toward the plant. A series of lamplights emit a golden glow and offer relief from the chill of a winter's eve. Sotter's mills, whether in Bucks County or farther afield, are cathedrals of industry–and the thread that links his early and mature career. He accords the structures a quiet grandeur, enhanced here by a generous commingling of light and color, shadow and atmosphere. Best known for his nocturnes–many of which were painted on site, en plein air–Sotter, in Miner Hillard Milling Company, treats viewers to a poetic winter idyll, while monumentalizing a modest flour mill.

George William Sotter (American, 1879–1953) The Artist's House (also known as Edward Redfield’s House) Signed ‘Sotter’ bottom right, oil on canvas 32 x 36 in. (81.3 x 91.4cm) Executed circa 1915. Provenance Richard Stuart Gallery, Pipersville, Pennsylvania (sold as Sotter's House). Private Collection. McClees Gallery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Acquired directly from the above. Private Collection, Pennsylvania. Exhibited "George Sotter: Light and Shadow," James A. Michener Art Museum, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, July 29-December 31, 2017 (exhibited as Redfield's House). Literature Valerie Ann Leeds, George Sotter: Light and Shadow, James A. Michener Art Museum, Doylestown, 2017, plate 16, p. 30 (illustrated as Redfield's House). Note After a short trip to California in 1916 which, for a little while, inspired him to relocate out West, George Sotter eventually settled in Bucks County, lured by “the tranquil tenor, beautiful stone houses, and rolling hills” of the lush region as Valerie Leeds puts it. The fact that his friend and earlier “chaperon”, Edward Redfield, lived nearby also favored this relocation and ultimately marked a new chapter in his oeuvre. The present work, a bird-eye’s view of a humble two-part cottage nestled in the valley in winter, was historically understood as either a rendition of the artist's home, a Quaker farmstead known as Walnut Grove Farm, located on Ash Mill Road in Holicong, or that of Edward Redfield's - a 127 acre strip of land in Centre Bridge, just five miles north of New Hope. No matter the subject (in each case the artist's home would be on the right while their studio would be on the left), the painting clearly pays homage to Redfield by channeling several hallmarks of his celebrated style, namely the muted, almost totalistic use of light blues and purples (all beautifully contrasted by the omnipresent stark white powdered snow) but also the general composition itself. Here, the viewer is directly invited in the picture plane by way of the foreground, which acts as a stage, from which the view offers itself. The bare tangling trees, as well as the color gradations on top of the faraway hill and in the sky are also reminiscent of Redfield’s works from the same time-period.

George William Sotter (American, 1879–1953) Gloucester Harbor

        Est: $25,000 - $40,000

George William Sotter (American, 1879–1953) Gloucester Harbor Signed and dated 'George Sotter/1911' bottom right, oil on canvas 26 x 32 1/4 in. (66 x 82cm) Provenance J.J. Gillespie, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Private Collection, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Literature Valerie Ann Leeds, George Sotter: Light and Shadow, James A. Michener Art Museum, Doylestown, 2017, fig. 2, p. 22 (illustrated in black and white). Note Like many artists of his generation, George Sotter travelled to New England, notably Gloucester, to capture the picturesque environs and partake in the multiple art colonies established near the harbor. Although little is known of Sotter’s travels there, it is likely the destination was suggested by his friend Edward Redfield, who often stopped in the town on his way further up north to Maine. The artist's first Gloucester landscapes date from 1911, and while they depart radically from his earlier Pittsburgh scenes through the emergence of a bright, dazzling palette, they share the same vigor, solidity of form, and assured brushwork. The present work belongs to the earliest marine scenes Sotter ever depicted. It offers a very modern glimpse of Gloucester’s marina, and instead of driving his attention to the shimmering water and clear sky–as every artist would be expected to do–Sotter instead focuses on the wooden pier, which occupies most of the composition, where the viewer can spot several workers and fishing gear. The view of the harbor itself is obstructed by the boats’ masts and nets, while the sky is completely truncated. Rather than a pure exercise of light and color, the work references the local, bustling fishing economy and hereby reveals the inherent beauty of the mundane everyday life in Gloucester. Sotter accentuates this cheerful feeling via large swaths of paint, and by using a wide selection of buoyant, saturated colors, ranging from vivid yellows, blues, and reds which all harmoniously contrast with the surrounding pearlescent water, and the earth-toned dock. The result is a sun-filled, uplifting mosaic of shimmering colors that marks a new era in Sotter’s career which will soon lead to the romantic nocturnes he is best known for today.

(An American Tradition, 1995-96, p. 29). Born in Pittsburgh on September 25, 1879, Sotter began his art education with local teachers and with Henry G. Keller, who had studied in various German academies. Keller, known for his superb, atmospheric watercolors, taught at the Cleveland School of Art but Sotter studied with him in Pittsburgh. Later Sotter would exhibit between 1903 and 1937 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His works were also shown at the Corcoran Gallery (1912-23), the Carnegie International (1901-26), the National Academy of Design (1913 and 1921), and at the Art Institute of Chicago (1911-27). Examination under UV light reveals two mains areas of restoration (relatively minor): at bottom left corner and upper left, along the top outer edge of the painting. We also notice pinpoint, minuscule dots of retouching throughout: center left (shed's facade and roof as well as on some of the branches to the left), bottom right (in the snow) as well as at center (main building's roof) and upper center and upper center right (in the sky). Freeman's, Philadelphia, sale of December 8, 2013, lot 174. Acquired directly from the above sale. Private Collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Condition report: Frame: 43 1/4 x 47 x 1 1/2 in. The relined canvas in overall good condition, with craquelure running diagonally across the canvas, with slight abrasions along the top outer edge of the canvas (we see the canvas' edge). Examination under UV light reveals sporadic restoration: in upper left and right corners as well as along the top outer edge (most likely covering frame abrasions), at center, center left an right (clouds and sky). With minor dots of inpainting at bottom left and throughout the bottom of the work (very minor). We also notice long streaks running down the right part of the canvas (from the top to the center, across the sky). Given their look and texture, we believe these correspond to old varnish drips. GEORGE WILLIAM SOTTER (AMERICAN, 1879–1953) UNTITLED (SUMMER FARMLAND)

        Est: $40,000 - $60,000

George William Sotter (American, 1879–1953) Untitled (Summer Farmland) Signed 'GEORGE [underlined]/SOTTER' bottom right, oil on canvas 25 x 30 in. (63.5 x 76.2m) Executed circa 1915. In a Bernard Badura frame. Provenance Rago Auctions, Lambertville, sale of September 15, 2007, lot 1 (as The Artist's Studio). Acquired directly from the above sale. Private Collection, New Hope, Pennsylvania. Footnote: Exhibited "The Painterly Voice: Bucks Couny's Fertile Ground," James A. Michener Art Musem, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, October 22, 2011-April 1, 2012. "George Sotter: Light and Shadow," James A. Michener Art Musem, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, July 29-December 31, 2017 (as Untitled). Note The present work was executed shortly after George Sotter's return from California, and definite departure from Pittsburgh. The artist's move to the countryside marks a new interest in pastoral scenes, and a clearer, brighter palette not dissimilar to Redfield's - Sotter's former instructor. The spirit of the Father of Pennsylvania Impressionism can be see here in the acidic greens, yellows and the energic brushwork which capture the untamed, lush landscape of Bucks County. The painting here seems to depict the artist's studio, a Quaker farmstead known as Walnut Grove Farm, located on Ash Mill Road in Holicong, Pennsylvania. Condition report: Frame: 30 1/2 x 35 3/4 x 1 1/2 in. The unlined canvas in excellent original condition. Examination under UV light does not reveal any sign of inpainting. We notice the paint has been applied very thinly in the upper section of the canvas (see top of the trees), which leaves some parts of the canvas bare (part of the artist's working method, not abrasions).

The beauty of the building's proportions, plus the lovely native stone made it one of the gems of our county. These qualities inspired this; one of my best paintings.
