The main artistic tenets evinced in Soto's works are pure abstraction, vibrations, progressions and geometric rigor. They can be seen through the use of lines and superimposed squares in his sculptures, made with paint and a series of industrial and synthetic materials. He spent much time in Europe, becoming a key member of the Group Zero movement, which included such artists as Lucio Fontana, Gunther Uecker and Yves Klein. JESÚS RAFAEL SOTO (Ciudad Bolivar/Venezuela 1923–2005 Paris) Trois cercles noirs. 1996. Painted panel, wire, metal and silkscreen colour. Signed, dated and titled on the reverse: "TROIS CERCLES NOIRS" Soto 1996, as well as with inscribed direction: HAUT. 85.5 × 102 × 16.5 cm. Certificate: Comité Soto, Paris, 28.11.2023 (no. Ref. 64988222). Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland, by descent to the present owner. Our thanks to the Comité Soto for their kind support. "My investigations have nothing to do with the objects themselves. My painting tries to represent movement, vibration, light, space, time, things that exist but which do not have a determined form, and the only way I have found to do this is to attempt to represent the relationships between them." Jesús Rafael Soto The extraordinary art installation "Trois cercles noirs" from 1996 presents a captivating visual challenge. With its accomplished combination of different materials and colours, it offers the viewer an interactive experience within a world of optical illusions. Three complete black shapes as well as several suggested, half-finished circles, strokes and metal rods create the appearance of movement in this large-scale work. Since they are merely attached to the upper edge with wires and hang loosely, they give the appearance of floating. The weight of the metallic forms causes the wires to form parallel lines, reinforcing the impression of translocation and dynamism. With the fine white vertical lines on the black background, Jesús Rafael Soto also skilfully suggests visual depth. ------------------------------------------------- JESÚS RAFAEL SOTO (Ciudad Bolivar/Venezuela 1923–2005 Paris) Trois cercles noirs. 1996. My painting tries to represent movement, vibration, light, space, time, things that exist but which do not have a determined form, and the only way I have found to do this is to attempt to represent the relationships between them."
