JOAQUÍN SOROLLA Y BASTIDA (Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, Madrid, 1923). "Bullfight".1897. Oil on fine cardboard with white primer adhered to French-made cardboard. Signed, dedicated to Pedro Gil Moreno de Mora and dated in the lower right corner. Attached certificate issued by Blanca Pons Sorolla. Photograph of this work is preserved in the Photographic Archive of the Sorolla Museum. Work inventoried in the Catalogue Raisonné of the artist with the number BPS 3480. Measurements: 25,3 x 35,5 cm; 44,5 x 54,5 cm (frame). The oil painting "Bullfight" is an early work of Sorolla, in which his vibrant style is already unmistakable, although at that time he was mainly interested in genre and popular themes, not yet linked to the light of the Mediterranean. Here he masterfully captures the dramatic essence of bullfighting, highlighting the rapid brushstrokes and his ability to synthesize the movement and emotion of the fight with great formal economy. The bull charges with impetus the red cape held by the bullfighter, who leans toward the animal with a skillful and confident gesture. The banderillero, behind the bull, assumes a strategic position to plunge into the bleeding back of the bull with a dramatic flashing edge. This character, with his face unhinged by the rapid movement of his body, seems to dilute in a pure fierceness impregnated with fierceness. Three characters wearing monteras are standing in the background, but inside the ring. With their arms raised, they attentively observe the confrontation, which adds a theatrical touch that contrasts with the drama of the staging. The ring dominates the composition, eclipsing the space of the stands, which are reduced to spots bordering on abstraction. The intense reds of the cape and the blood contrast with the warm ochers of the sand, balanced by the white blouses and the green touches of the jackets. Sorolla flees from the spectacularization of bullfighting, and even ignores the audience. What interests him is to communicate an atmosphere charged with contradictory emotions related to the emotional exaltation and violence inherent in the rite. Painted in 1897, this oil painting belongs to the early years of Sorolla's career, when he was exploring themes related to Spanish traditions. Although Sorolla would later become famous for his luminous depictions of Mediterranean life, works such as "Corrida de toros" demonstrate his early interest in culture and folklore, approached with an unparalleled pulse. Already in his school days, Joaquín Sorolla showed his fondness for drawing and painting, attending the drawing classes given by the sculptor Cayetano Capuz at the School of Artisans in the afternoons. Awarded upon finishing his preliminary studies at the Escuela Normal Superior, he entered the prestigious Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia in 1879. Also, during his visits to Madrid in 1881 and 1882, he copied paintings by Velázquez, Ribera and El Greco at the Prado Museum. Two years later he obtained a great success at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts with a history painting, which stimulated him to apply for a scholarship to study at the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. Having achieved his goal, in 1885 Sorolla left for Rome, staying in Paris for several months before arriving. In the French capital he was impressed by the paintings of the realists and the painters who worked outdoors. At the end of his years in Rome he returned to Valencia in 1889, settling in Madrid the following year. In 1892 Sorolla showed a new concern in his art, becoming interested in social problems by depicting the sad scene of "¡Otra Margarita!", awarded a first class medal at the National, and the following year at the International in Chicago. This sensitivity would remain in his work until the end of the decade, in his performances on the Valencian coast. Gradually, however, the Valencian master will abandon the themes of unhappy children that we see in "Triste herencia", which had been awarded a prize at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and at the National in Madrid a year later. Encouraged by the success of his resplendent images of the Mediterranean, and stimulated by his love of the light and life of its sunny beaches, he focused on these scenes in his works, more cheerful and pleasant, with which he would achieve international fame. In 1906 he held his first individual exhibition at the George Petit Gallery in Paris, where he also demonstrated his skills as a portraitist. In 1908 the American Archer Milton Huntington, impressed by the artist's exhibition at the Grafton Gallery in London, sought to acquire two of his works for his Hispanic Society. A year later he himself invited Sorolla to exhibit at his institution, resulting in an exhibition in 1909 that was a huge success. The relationship between Huntington and Sorolla led to the most important commission of the painter's life: the creation of the immense canvases destined to illustrate, on the walls of the Hispanic Society, the regions of Spain. Trying to capture the essence of the lands and people of his country, Sorolla traveled throughout Spain between 1911 and 1919, while continuing to hold exhibitions. Incapacitated by an attack of hemiplegia in 1921, Sorolla died two years later, without seeing his great "Vision of Spain", which would not be installed until 1926. He is currently represented in the Prado Museum and the one that bears his name in Madrid, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Orsay Museum in Paris, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Fine Arts Museums of Bilbao and Valencia, the National Portrait Gallery in London and many others.

Painter's palette where six painters have captured small works of great pictorial quality, almost miniaturized. The palette that serves as a pictorial base seems to be dominated by a navy of great spatial depth, on which is superimposed a view of a palace in Venice, and several portraits starring nuns, a man dressed in an orientalist manner, a small child and a woman with a bow attributed to Sorolla. Painter's palettes, traditionally conceived as functional tools, have not only witnessed the artistic process, but have sometimes been transformed into unique canvases. In the 19th century, artists such as Joaquín Sorolla broke with the idea of the palette as a mere instrument, using it as a support to create original works. These pieces, loaded with texture and spontaneity. The word "Res" can be seen in the lower center. Provenance: Elena Sorolla García (Daughter of the artist). Measurements: 10,5 x 13 cm; 31 x 34 cm (frame). The sketchy technique of this work, almost abstract, indicates that it is a study of the artist, taken from life. This was a frequent exercise used by Sorolla, who tried to capture the luminosity and its reflection on the environment. This painting captures that essence, showing, as if it were the painter's notes, a pictorial composition that is especially reminiscent of the same one developed by the author in his work "The return from fishing. Towing the boat", painted in 1984 and currently in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Already in his school days, Joaquín Sorolla showed his love for drawing and painting, attending in the afternoons to the drawing classes taught by the sculptor Cayetano Capuz at the School of Artisans. He is currently represented in the Prado Museum and the one that bears his name in Madrid, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Orsay Museum in Paris, and the J. Paul Getty Museum. Work supervised by Blanca Pons Sorolla and referenced in the catalog raisonné with nº BPS 103. Attached certificate issued by D. Francisco Pons Sorolla y Arnau, April 3, 1984. Provenance: Augusto Dánvila Jaldero Collection. With inscription on the back.

JOAQUÍN SOROLLA Y BASTIDA (Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, Madrid, 1923). "La santera", 1890. Watercolor on paper. Presents damage in the frame. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 54 x 39 cm; 78 x 63 cm (frame). Watercolor painted by Joaquín Sorolla at 27 years of age, prior to the development of his luminist style as can be seen by the absence of the usual force that has the light in his paintings. This costumbrista scene denotes the academicist influence of his training, as can be seen in the choice of the subject, as well as in the attempt of realism and preciosity in the details. The composition of intimate character represents a santera lighting a candle that illuminates a triptych with the image of the virgin in the center and family coats of arms on the side panels. As we have mentioned before, in this scene there is not the usual Sorolla's light, but it is practically a zenithal light that, nevertheless, with the capture of the space and the atmosphere, already allows us to intuit the best of Sorolla. Following the line of costumbrismo, the Valencian roots of the artist are observed in two aspects, on the one hand, with the representation of the tilework, typically Valencian, with an enhanced baseboard that reaches almost to the shoulders of the woman, and the clothing of the same, with clothes that could be very Valencian style. He used to paint this type of small works so that later his dealer, Francisco Jover, could sell them due to the great demand they had. Already in his school days, Joaquín Sorolla showed his fondness for drawing and painting, attending the drawing classes given by the sculptor Cayetano Capuz in the School of Artisans in the afternoons. JOAQUÍN SOROLLA Y BASTIDA (Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, Madrid, 1923). "Street of a village", 1895. Watercolor and paper. Attached certificate of authenticity issued by Blanca Pons Sorolla. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Measurements: 34 x 25 cm; 69 x 58 cm (frame). In this work of Joaquín Sorolla, dated in 1895, we can appreciate a daily scene, set in a typical rural environment of the south of Spain. The painting, done in watercolor, presents a light and fresh atmosphere, with soft tones that capture the Mediterranean light. In the foreground, two figures are seated on a stone bench next to the entrance of a house. A man, dressed in simple clothes with a blue scarf on his head, appears to be conversing with a woman wearing a traditional dress adorned with flowers and a brightly colored shawl, adding dynamism to the composition. In the background, through a small window, a flower pot peeks out, adding a touch of life and detail to the painting. The architectural setting, with whitewashed walls and tiled roofs, reflects the aesthetics of a Mediterranean village, while the details, such as the green street lamp hanging on the wall, give authenticity and charm to the scene. In the background, a landscape of rolling hills and clear skies stretches out to frame the moment, creating a contrast between the intimate space of the village and the vastness of the surrounding nature. The loose brushwork and use of color convey warmth and everydayness, emphasizing Sorolla's connection to the luminous environments and genre scenes. It is a work that captures not only an instant, but also the essence of Spanish rural life in the late 19th century. Already in his school days, Joaquín Sorolla showed his fondness for drawing and painting, attending drawing classes in the afternoons given by the sculptor Cayetano Capuz at the School of Artisans. Dimensions: (Frame) 24 in. (H) x 17 in. (W) (Canvas) 20.5 in. (H) x 13.5 in. (W) It is very likely that the original provenance of this work was that of Juan Antonio García del Castillo, son of the photographer Antonio García, since D. José Entrecanales acquired several works from that source and they had several of the studies for the Oath of the Constitution. In the photograph from the HSA Archive, it is noted that the model was chosen for her resemblance to Queen Maria Cristina of Habsburg.  We are grateful to Blanca Pons Sorolla for her help in cataloguing this lot and for confirming that this painting will be included in her forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist’s work (Inv. 4959). Delfina Entrecanales (1927-2022) was a Spanish-British arts philanthropist and patron. Born to a southern Spanish family, she moved to England at the end of the Spanish civil war. She was the founder and director of the Delfina Foundation, an important not-for-profit arts foundation which supported, and continues to support, artists through residency programmes and exhibition space in London.

    Est: £20,000 - £40,000

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (Spanish, 1863 - 1923) Study of a woman's head for the painting “Oath of the Constitution by Her Majesty the Queen Regent Doña María Cristina de Habsburgo” Madrid, 1897 Oil on canvas Provenance: Juan Antonio García del Castillo; Jaime García Banús; José Entrecanales Ibarra; Delfina Entrecanales; Thence by descent.

Copy 627/2998 Study book and art book with 69 facsimiles and 5 folding triptychs and two plates. Publisher: Artika, in co-publication with the Sorolla Museum Foundation. Preserves box of Measurements: 35,3 x 45,8 cm (books, x2): 35,3 x 45, 8 cm (folder with plates): 41x 53 x 12,5 cm (box). This artist's book produced between the Sorolla Foundation and the specialized publishing house Artika presents a selection of works by the Valencian artist based on the theme of the sea. Joaquín Sorolla (Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, Madrid, 1923) showed his fondness for drawing and painting by attending drawing classes given by the sculptor Cayetano Capuz at the School of Artisans in the afternoons.

Soon the work will be included in the catalog raisonné of the artist (No. BPS-3860). Measurements: 14 x 11 cm; 47 x 43 cm (frame). This painting belongs to a seminal period of Sorolla's production, specifically to the period in which he resided in Rome, a key period for his formation. We can appreciate in this masterfully resolved intimate landscape where the artist is already defining a loose and vibrant brushstroke that will lead him to the full and fair recognition of his unmistakable technique. The expressiveness is maximum thanks to the skillful touches combining quick and broken strokes with a palette of ochers and browns in wise contrast with the light flesh tones and draped whites. Already in his school days, Joaquín Sorolla showed his fondness for drawing and painting, attending in the afternoons the drawing classes given by the sculptor Cayetano Capuz at the School of Artisans. Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863 - 1923) "Still Life. Flowers Still Life" (circa 1880)

    Est: €16,000 - €35,000

Oil on canvas. Signed and initialled in the lower right corner "J Sorolla". Executed between 1880 and 1882.  With a 19th century wood frame. Size: 77.5 x 44.5 cm; Size with frame: 86 x 53.5 cm   Provenance:  - Valencian private collection   Literature:   Francisco Javier Pérez Rojas, professor and Art Historian, talks about this work in the catalogue "Sorolla and the rebirth of the Valencian school" produced on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name: "Flower painting has a long tradition in Valencia, given that floral motifs adorned the silk brocades produced in the city. Sorolla had a real passion for flowers and commented on this to Clotilde in one of his letters. [ ]. This explains the abundant number of still lifes that have been catalogued from Sorolla's youthful years, as well as their quality. Among them is this unpublished Still Life (c. 1880 - 1882), which depicts a Chinese "Hu" vase with flowers and a small jewel or bracelet on a table. In this space, the copious bouquet, composed of bluebells, jasmine and pansies, is transformed into a burst of light and chromatic colour by the combination of all these delicate and fleeting plants. The verticality of this composition introduces a variation on the horizontality of other catalogued floral still lifes. [ ]"   Bibliography:  - Sorolla and the rebirth of the Valencian School. By Javier Pérez Rojas. Chap II, Sorolla's beginnings. Exhibition and academic context. Fig. 10.    Catalogue note:  - With certificate made by Blanca Pons-Sorolla Ruiz de la Prada, issued in 2024. - Included in the catalogue raisonné of the artist with reference BPS 18.
