Preserves box of Measurements: 35,3 x 45,8 cm (books, x2): 35,3 x 45, 8 cm (folder with plates): 41x 53 x 12,5 cm (box). This artist's book produced between the Sorolla Foundation and the specialized publishing house Artika presents a selection of works by the Valencian artist based on the theme of the sea. Joaquín Sorolla (Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, Madrid, 1923) showed his fondness for drawing and painting by attending drawing classes given by the sculptor Cayetano Capuz at the School of Artisans in the afternoons. Awarded upon finishing his preliminary studies at the Escuela Normal Superior, he entered the prestigious Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia in 1879. Also, during his visits to Madrid in 1881 and 1882, he copied paintings by Velázquez, Ribera and El Greco at the Prado Museum. Two years later he obtained a great success at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts with a history painting, which stimulated him to apply for a scholarship to study at the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. Having achieved his goal, in 1885 Sorolla left for Rome, staying in Paris for several months before arriving. In the French capital he was impressed by the paintings of the realists and the painters who worked outdoors. At the end of his years in Rome he returned to Valencia in 1889, settling in Madrid the following year. In 1892 Sorolla showed a new concern in his art, becoming interested in social problems by depicting the sad scene of "¡Otra Margarita!", awarded a first class medal at the National, and the following year at the International in Chicago. This sensitivity would remain in his work until the end of the decade, in his performances on the Valencian coast. Gradually, however, the Valencian master will abandon the themes of unhappy children that we see in "Triste herencia", which had been awarded a prize at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and at the National in Madrid a year later. Encouraged by the success of his resplendent images of the Mediterranean, and stimulated by his love of the light and life of its sunny beaches, he focused on these scenes in his works, more cheerful and pleasant, with which he would achieve international fame.

In 1906 he held his first individual exhibition at the George Petit Gallery in Paris, where he also demonstrated his skills as a portraitist. In 1908 the American Archer Milton Huntington, impressed by the artist's exhibition at the Grafton Gallery in London, sought to acquire two of his works for his Hispanic Society. A year later he himself invited Sorolla to exhibit at his institution, resulting in an exhibition in 1909 that was a huge success. The relationship between Huntington and Sorolla led to the most important commission of the painter's life: the creation of the immense canvases destined to illustrate, on the walls of the Hispanic Society, the regions of Spain. Trying to capture the essence of the lands and people of his country, Sorolla traveled throughout Spain between 1911 and 1919, while continuing to hold exhibitions. Incapacitated by an attack of hemiplegia in 1921, Sorolla died two years later, without seeing his great "Vision of Spain", which would not be installed until 1926. He is currently represented in the Prado Museum and the one that bears his name in Madrid, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Orsay Museum in Paris, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Fine Arts Museums of Bilbao and Valencia, the National Portrait Gallery in London and many others.

JOAQUÍN SOROLLA Y BASTIDA (Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, Madrid, 1923). "Paisaje de sierra", c. 1887-1889. Oil on panel. We thank Blanca Pons Sorolla for her help in the expertise of the work. Soon the work will be included in the catalog raisonné of the artist (No. BPS-3860). Measurements: 14 x 11 cm; 47 x 43 cm (frame). This painting belongs to a seminal period of Sorolla's production, specifically to the period in which he resided in Rome, a key period for his formation. We can appreciate in this masterfully resolved intimate landscape where the artist is already defining a loose and vibrant brushstroke that will lead him to the full and fair recognition of his unmistakable technique. The expressiveness is maximum thanks to the skillful touches combining quick and broken strokes with a palette of ochers and browns in wise contrast with the light flesh tones and draped whites. Already in his school days, Joaquín Sorolla showed his fondness for drawing and painting, attending in the afternoons the drawing classes given by the sculptor Cayetano Capuz at the School of Artisans. This sensitivity will remain in his work until the end of the decade, in his performances on the Valencian coast. We would like to thank Blanca Pons Sorolla for her help in the expert analysis of the work. The work will soon be included in the catalog raisonné of the artist (No. BPS-3860).

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863 - 1923) "Still Life. Flowers Still Life" (circa 1880)

          Est: €16,000 - €35,000

Oil on canvas. Signed and initialled in the lower right corner "J Sorolla". Executed between 1880 and 1882.  With a 19th century wood frame. Size: 77.5 x 44.5 cm; Size with frame: 86 x 53.5 cm   Provenance:  - Valencian private collection   Literature:   Francisco Javier Pérez Rojas, professor and Art Historian, talks about this work in the catalogue "Sorolla and the rebirth of the Valencian school" produced on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name: "Flower painting has a long tradition in Valencia, given that floral motifs adorned the silk brocades produced in the city. Sorolla had a real passion for flowers and commented on this to Clotilde in one of his letters. [ ]. This explains the abundant number of still lifes that have been catalogued from Sorolla's youthful years, as well as their quality. Among them is this unpublished Still Life (c. 1880 - 1882), which depicts a Chinese "Hu" vase with flowers and a small jewel or bracelet on a table. In this space, the copious bouquet, composed of bluebells, jasmine and pansies, is transformed into a burst of light and chromatic colour by the combination of all these delicate and fleeting plants. The verticality of this composition introduces a variation on the horizontality of other catalogued floral still lifes. [ ]"   Bibliography:  - Sorolla and the rebirth of the Valencian School. JOAQUÍN SOROLLA Y BASTIDA (Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, Madrid, 1923) "Burial in the Catacombs", Rome, 1885. Oil on canvas. Signed, initialed and dedicated "Al Sr. D. Francisco Pradilla / su muy afmo / J Sorolla" in the lower right corner. Provenance: Collection of the painter Francisco Pradilla, Director of the Spanish School in Rome. Attached certificate of authenticity signed by Blanca Pons Sorolla. Work referenced in the catalog raisonné with the number BPS107. Measurements: 55 x 78 cm; 76 x 100 cm (frame). With the dedication "To Mr. D. Francisco Pradilla / his very affectionate / J Sorolla" is demonstrated the esteem that Pradilla and Sorolla had for each other, a friendship still evident thanks to the correspondence preserved between the two artists. During the years that Francisco Pradilla was Director of the Spanish School in Rome, Joaquín Sorolla was awarded a scholarship by the Diputación de Valencia in that city. Sorolla would always remember Francisco Pradilla (1848-1921) as a key figure in his training. In his own words: "When I arrived in Rome, Pradilla took me in; I had to use his blind love for the beauty of line, and he knew how to instill it in me. It really helped me a lot. As he encouraged a restless spirit within me, he tempered and confronted my rebellious impetuosity in those days". "Burial in the Catacombs" was painted during his stay in Rome, where, while working, Sorolla got to know classical and Renaissance art, as well as the great museums, and also made contact with other artists. The work, which already denotes the impressionist style that would characterize the Valencian artist's entire career, can be related to other canvases from the same Roman period, such as "The Burial of Christ" (1886-1887), a work presented at the National Exhibition of 1887 criticized for paying more attention to the light of the sunset than to the sacred drama. Unfortunately, the work, which was destroyed by Sorolla in a fit of rage because of the criticism he received, has not been preserved. There is only a small preparatory sketch and four fragments that were recovered in 1979 from the basements of the Sorolla Museum. Already in his school days, Joaquín Sorolla showed his fondness for drawing and painting, attending the drawing classes given by the sculptor Cayetano Capuz in the School of Artisans in the afternoons. Awarded upon finishing his preliminary studies at the Escuela Normal Superior, he entered the prestigious Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia in 1879.

In 1881 Joaquín Sorolla made his first visit to the Prado Museum where he came into contact with the old Spanish masters. Such was his admiration for Velázquez's painting that he worked on the execution of several copies that served at the same time to teach and perfect his technique (Portrait of Mariana of Austria, Masaveu collection; Menipo, Sorolla Museum, among others). The artist kept these studio copies for himself in a folder throughout his life, "as pleasant witnesses of those unforgettable days dedicated to the cult, following in this so many of his companions, by the greatest of the world's painters" ( Bernardino de Pantorba, The life and work of Joaquín Sorolla, 1953, p. 16)

JOAQUÍN SOROLLA Y BASTIDA (Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, Madrid, 1923). "The arrival of the fishing, Valencia", ca. 1900. Oil on panel. Dedicated, signed and initialed in the lower right corner: "To the friend Viguer / J. Sorolla". Certified by Blanca Pons Sorolla. Measurements: 10 x 14,5 cm; 46,5 x 55 cm (frame). In this small oil painting Sorolla's enormous plastic gifts are concentrated. Next to a sailboat stranded on the shore, a group of women are lined up who turn their backs to look at the horizon. Their blue and red scarves cover their shoulders, and their black hair is trimmed in front of a sea edged with foam. It is a bold and fully modern composition, in which Sorolla employs tight, swift and generous touches. The swift, dense brushstrokes permeate the scene with a cadence of their own, vibrant as the lights of the Mediterranean, immortalizing the simple beauty of the daily encounter of the women of a seaside town. This tablet was a gift from Sorolla to Luis Viguer, owner of the Casa Viguer dedicated to the sale of artistic products or painting materials that Sorolla often used, which was located at 24 Corregería Street, Valencia. Already in his school days, Joaquín Sorolla showed his fondness for drawing and painting, attending in the afternoons to the drawing classes taught by the sculptor Cayetano Capuz at the School of Artisans. The relationship between Huntington and Sorolla gave rise to the most important commission of the painter's life: the creation of the immense canvases destined to illustrate, on the walls of the Hispanic Society, the regions of Spain. He is currently represented in the Prado Museum and the one that bears his name in Madrid, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Orsay Museum in Paris, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles...

JOAQUÍN SOROLLA Y BASTIDA (Valencia, 1863 - Cercedilla, Madrid, 1923). "Cutted flowers", 1882. Oil on panel. Signed in the lower right corner. Attached certificate issued by Blanca Pons-Sorolla. Measurements: 25 x 45 cm; 35 x 55 cm (frame). This artistic creation is located in the decade of 1880, framed in the first phase of the artist while he was in Valencia. During this period, he was inclined towards genre, mythological, orientalist and historical themes, in accordance with the preferences of the time. During those years, Sorolla visited Madrid and the Prado Museum on several occasions, immersed in the study of the great masters. In this initial phase of defining his style, the influence of the realists is evident in his brushwork, although his skill in capturing the essence of realism and the vivacity of color was already distinguished. During this period, the capture of natural light acquires a prominent importance in his work, developing a unique ability to capture its effects in an authentic way. The work in question is part of this formative stage of the painter, in which teachers required him to adhere to the forms learned at the Academy, being criticized in many cases due to its deviation from the classical schemes. The painting focuses on a group of flowers and leaves in the foreground, displaying vivid and vibrant colors against a background that suggests the characteristic beach that can be glimpsed at the end of the composition, thus contributing to Sorolla's distinctive legacy. Already in his school days, Joaquín Sorolla demonstrated his fondness for drawing and painting, attending drawing classes in the afternoons taught by sculptor Cayetano Capuz at the School of Artisans. Awarded upon finishing his preliminary studies at the Escuela Normal Superior, he entered the prestigious Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia in 1879.

Measurements: 16 x 10 cm; 40 x 34 cm (frame). Sorolla painted about fifteen self-portraits during his life, most of which are preserved in the Sorolla Museum in Madrid. In this drawing, we see a middle-aged man, with a stern expression, looking straight ahead. Confident and somewhat active, he shows the high point of his career in which he finds himself. The stroke is energetic as is his brushstroke in the oils, testifying to a firm and resolute pulse. We can compare it with the paintings of the same period when he painted in his studio or on the beach, which was still his open-air studio. But the drawing, being dedicated to a friend, is imbued with a more spontaneous character. Already in his school days, Joaquín Sorolla showed his fondness for drawing and painting, attending drawing classes in the afternoons given by the sculptor Cayetano Capuz at the School of Artisans. Awarded upon finishing his preliminary studies at the Escuela Normal Superior, he entered the prestigious Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia in 1879.
