Attributed to HENDRICK MAERTENSZ SORGH (Rotterdam, Netherlands, ca. 1610 - 1670). "Copper bowls". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 39,5 x 48 cm. In this canvas we see a wide interior of kitchen, organized in two planes of depth to which a third one is added in the right side. In the foreground we see a set of kitchen utensils conceived as an independent still life, which occupies a large part of the composition. In the manner of the Flemish Pieter Aertsen (1508-1575) and Joachim Beuckelaer (1533-1574), the author of this work constructs a large naturalistic and scenographic painting, combining the still life with large figures to build a personal genre scene. In the seventeenth century, the genre of still life with figures will gain great importance in the Dutch and Flemish schools, with more dynamic and theatrical compositions, fully framed within the Baroque style, as we see here. Due to its formal and stylistic characteristics, we can attribute this work to the hand of Hendrick Maertensz Sorgh, a Dutch painter of the Golden Age specialized in genre painting, with scenes generally set in interiors represented with great naturalism. He trained with the Flemish David Teniers the Younger, from whom he learned the main characteristics of Flemish genre painting, and was also a disciple of Willem Pieterszoon Buytewech, also specialized in genre themes but of Dutch nationality, coming from Rotterdam like Sorgh. He painted mainly interiors with peasants, and is especially appreciated for his kitchen interiors, which include very well elaborated still lifes. He also depicted market scenes, portraits, seascapes and historical subjects, although he is remembered as a genre painter. Works by his hand are now held in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the National Gallery in London, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Metropolitan in New York, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Hunterian in Glasgow, the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen and other prominent public and private collections.

Hendrick Martensz Sorgh, Merry Peasant Company in an Interior

      Est: €30,000 - €50,000

The present interior scene is a characteristic work by the Dutch genre painter Hendrick Maertensz Sorgh. Fred Meijer dates it to around 1645-1650, a time when Sorgh specialised in peasant interiors under the influence of Adriaen Brouwer's pictorial inventions and the paintings of his compatriots Cornelis and Herman Saftleven, who were still living in Rotterdam. A "Merry Peasant Company" comparable in composition and richness of detail, which can be interpreted as a depiction of the Five Senses, was sold at Lempertz on 21st May 2022 (lot 2072, hammer price € 150,000). The attribution has been confirmed by Guido Jansen and Fred Meijer (written correspondence 25th October 2023).

Hendrik Martensz. Sorgh: Interior of a Stall

      Est: €15,000 - €20,000

SORGH, HENDRIK MARTENSZ Rotterdam 1611 - 1670 Title: Interior of a Stall. Technique: Oil on wood. Measurement: 37,5 x 48,5cm. Notation: Signed right on the wheelbarrow: M. Sorgh. Frame: Framed. Verso: On the panel an old adhesive label with indication of provenance Ed. Goldschmidt. Literature: K.J. Müllenmeister: Meer und Land im Licht des 17. Jahrhunderts, vol. 3, 1981, no. 423 with ill. Provenance: Private collection, Germany, acquired at Christie's in 1974 (here with the provenance note E. Goldsmith). Hendrick Maertensz Rokes, called Sorgh, who is best known for his market scenes with their colourful tones, began his career with interior scenes, in which he painted gallant situations with music and card games as well as scenes of everyday peasant life. It was precisely this type of genre painting that gave Sorgh the opportunity to fully express his curiosity and interest in every little detail. Indeed, his works are peppered with many objects and animals, seemingly strung together in random disorder, but which, on the contrary, are based on a balance of composition and colour. The pigsty depicted here is considered a classic example of this. While in the background a little boy hurries to feed the hungry pigs, heads of which can be discerned in the darkness, the foreground is littered with everyday objects, animals and food. The present painting is therefore not only a well-done sample of Sorgh's great artistry but also a vivid snapshot of peasant life in 17th century Rotterdam. Explanations to the Catalogue

      Hendrick Martensz Sorgh, Merry Peasants

      Est: €80,000 - €120,000

Signed lower left: HM Sorgh (HM conjoined) This painting is a characteristic work by the Dutch genre painter Hendrick Maertensz. Sorgh, which can be counted among his finest interior scenes. It was painted in Rotterdam in the mid-1640s. At this time Sorgh specialised in peasant interiors under the influence of Adriaen Brouwer's pictorial inventions and the painting of his compatriots Cornelis and Herman Saftleven, who still lived in Rotterdam at the time. In her monograph, Liane Schneeman interpreted the theme as a representation of the Five Senses: the couple in love on the left side of the table symbolise touch, the violinist behind them symbolises hearing, the woman opposite feeding her child symbolises taste, the seated man in a red cap symbolises seeing, and the smoker sitting at the very back in front of a string of onions symbolises smell (Schneeman op. cit., pp. 102-3). This painting was owned by the Dutch art collector and dealer Willem Lormier (1682-1758). For the visitors to his collection in The Hague, he published a catalogue of holdings in 1752, of which a copy with commentary has been preserved, giving precise information on purchases and sales (Korthals Altes op. cit., passim). Lormier acquired this painting in 1752 from the Amsterdam dealer David Ietswaart for 176 guilders. He sold it to the Russian prince Dmitri Alekseyevich Galitzin for 300 guilders in 1756. It is not known where it went after that, but Galitzin, who was later to become Russian ambassador to The Hague, bought artworks for Catherine the Great and also put together his own collection. In addition to the work by Sorgh, he also purchased two paintings by Isaac Koedijck, a Gerard Dou, two paintings by Adriaen van Ostade and a Gerard ter Borch from Lormier, paying 2,700 florins for the whole group, which left Lormier with a profit of 800 florins (Korthals Altes, op. cit., pp. 281-82). The present painting can be clearly identified from its description in Willem Lormier's reports, as the dimensions he gave are almost identical: 58 x 83 cm. All traces of the painting are lost after 1756, and it first reappears listed among the collection of Major Mills in Hilborough in 1955. His collection was sold at auction in 1985 and included a number of Dutch works from the collection of his ancestor JR Mills, which originated in the 1850s.

Hendrick Martensz Sorgh, A Market in a Harbour

      Est: €40,000 - €60,000

Signed and dated lower left (on the wheelbarrow): HM Sorgh 1655 The depiction of market scenes has a long history in Dutch painting, dating back to the 16th century. In the works of Pieter Aertsen (1508-1575) and his nephew Joachim Beuckelaer (1533-1575), Biblical narratives and moral messages usually served as a pretext for the depiction of lively market scenes and opulent arrays of food and wares. Their works also formed an important contribution to the later development of the still life genre. Hendrick Martensz. Sorgh picked up this same subject in the early 1650s in Rotterdam. He had a biographical connection to the motif since, like his father before him, he was also the owner of a shipping line ferrying goods between Rotterdam and Dordrecht. He was first documented as such in 1638 and appears to have continued this work alongside his artistic career until the end of his life. Sorgh's market still lifes “appear at the beginning of a renewal of interest in this motif, which was also a subject in the works of his contemporaries Gerard Dou, Adriaen van Ostade and Quirin van Brekelenkam throughout the 1660s“ (Stukenbrock, op. cit., p. 238). The present work, dated 1655, is a characteristic and early market scene of Sorgh. In the foreground on the right, we see a trader sitting at her vegetable stall offering a plate probably of herbs to a lady in a red dress. This detailed group of figures is accompanied by a boy in a broad-brimmed hat carrying a basket of fish, a nobly dressed gentleman, a child, and an older fisherman. The artistically arranged wares on the vegetable stand, which include various types of cabbage, carrots and artichokes, provide Sorgh with ample opportunity to demonstrate his mastery of still life painting. The same applies to the shimmering silver scales of the fish being laid out by a merchant on the lower edge of the image. Further into the mid-ground we see a second market stall in front of an open arcade on the left edge of the picture, where a woman is offering fried eggs for sale. A special feature of this painting is the addition of a view over the numerous ships moored in the harbour, whose precisely reproduced masts and sails form a charming background for the market scene in the foreground. A work which can be closely compared to the present canvas is a small depiction of a Dutch fish market painted one year prior to it currently housed in the Kassel Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (inv. no. GK 286). The piece also depicts a view of the harbour in the background, although with considerably fewer ships, and also shows the same stone arcade on the left. The two works also feature a similar figure of a fish merchant bent over his wares in the front edge of the painting. The fish market painting in Kassel is accompanied by a pendant image of a Dutch vegetable market (inv. no. GK 285). As in other comparable paintings by Sorgh, such as those in the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam (inv. no. 1818) or in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (inv. no. A 717), the pendant work only depicts vegetable stands. The present canvas is thought to be the only market scene by Sorgh in which he combines a vegetable stall with a depiction of fish.
