EDWARD SOREL (1929-) A Toast to Neil Bush.

        Est: $1,500 - $2,500

EDWARD SOREL (1929-) A Toast to Neil Bush. 9-panel cartoon for an unknown publication, circa 1988. Pen and ink on Bristol board. 17 x 14 inches. Signed in final panel. Neil Bush, son of former President George H. W. Bush, was a director at Denver-based Silverado Savings and Loan during the 1980s S&L crisis. An investigation by the U.S. Office of Thrift Supervision found that Bush had committed multiple breaches of fiduciary duty, involving numerous conflicts of interest. Although Bush faced no criminal charges, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) filed a civil lawsuit against him and other directors. His involvement in Silverado's failure drew significant media attention, partly because his father was the Vice President at the time, leading to speculation about preferential treatment due to his political connections.

Here, Sorel reveals Nixon's view in a visual bubble where we see that he is holding a terrible hand: a busted flush and a busted straight; his only move now is to bluff the other players at the table into thinking he holds better cards then he does.

Edward Sorel (American, born 1929) Original Political 1968 Kennedy Painting - Ramparts Magazine

        Est: $600 - $800

Edward Sorel (American, 1929-) Arthur Schlesinger - Original 1968 Ramparts Magazine Political Illustration Painting. Color watercolor, ink, charcoal, and pencil on paper and board. Painting depicts American historian, social critic, and public intellectual Arthur Schlesinger peering up as a bird from typing - Now Is The Time For All Good Men To Come To The Aid of His Brother. The typed words referencing the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and need for his brother Robert Kennedy, to run for United States President. We contacted the artist and asked what publication the illustration was used for and when it was published. We received the following prompt reply from Mr. Sorel: "It was done for Ramparts magazine when Bobby Kennedy was trying to get the Democratic nomination for President." Ramparts was a glossy illustrated American political and literary magazine, published from 1962 to 1975 and closely associated with the New Left political movement. Sight size measures 11.8 inches high,11.5 inches wide. Frame measures 16.2 inches high, 15.4 inches wide. Framed and well protected under glass. In good condition. From AskArt: Edward Sorel (born 1929). A regular magazine contributor as a cartoonist, has done commission work for The Atlantic Monthly, Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, a publication for which he has created forty-five covers. He started in the industry in the 1960s when he was hired by editors of The New York Times and The Village Voice. He greatly disapproves of being labelled as an illustrator because the term simply suggests a hired contractor, and he regards his work as much more creative than that, especially with talent needed for drawing. He says: "I never really interested myself in what constitutes fine art and what constitutes commercial art . . .I do what interests me." (91) In addition to cartoons, Sorel also does comic book art. One of his projects of which he is most proud is "Literary Lives" for Atlantic Monthly. For this assignment, he read unauthorized biographies to get inspiration for what his subjects, such as Lilian Hellman, were 'really' lie. Then he began by doing spontaneous pencil drawings. A retrospective of his work was held at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC in Fall, 1999.

Image size 9 inches x 19 inches. Frame measures 15 inches x 25 inches. From Askart.com: Sorel Etrog's sculpture probes the relationship between man and machinery and attempts to illustrate an expressive intersection between the individual and industrialism. The machinery of the manufacturer become the tools of the artist. Steel plating, sheet metal, bolts, rivets and hinges are prominently featured in this work of industrial art, illustrating contact, tension and articulation. The sculptor has a fascination with the industrial themes of the twentieth century and asks the viewer to see that even the most utilitarian objects of our creation also have at least some artistic and expressive component. One of his pieces, Space Plough II, has a strong but simple steel construction, a basic triangular shape and is painted in that recognizable cautionary orange of heavy duty industrial machinery. Etrog's trademark central hinge is also prominently featured. At first glance the piece might look like something left behind by a road crew. "Is this just a plough?" a viewer might wonder. It is a justified first impression. But Etrog makes us reconsider and ask a different set of questions with a different sort of emphasis: Is this just a plough? Or, Can a plough be art? These tools we have made and used to such great practical success- - do they speak for us? Is this our art? "Arguably the most critically celebrated Canadian sculptor alive today, Etrog's impressive and multi-faceted career has spanned more than 40 years. In that time he has been prolific as a sculptor, a painter, an illustrator, a poet and a film maker. His work has been displayed at major international galleries around the world from Israel to Singapore, from India to Switzerland. In North America his position is secure in many of the most prestigious private and public collections, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, as well as the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa and Le Musee des Beaux Arts in Montreal. For decades Etrog's sculpture has played an important role in the development of the Canadian Arts. In 1988, he was commissioned to represent Canada with a sculpture for the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. In 1994, the Government of Canada donated the sculpture "Sunbird" to Normandy, France, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the liberation by Canadian forces. In 1967, Etrog was commissioned by Expo in Montreal to create two large sculptures for the World's Fair and in 1968 he was asked to create the small statuettes which would serve as the Canadian Film Awards. Though these awards are now more famously known as "The Genies," they were originally called "Etrogs." Throughout his career Etrog has been closely associated with many of the twentieth century's greatest thinkers and artists. He has collaborated with distinguished international literary figures Samuel Beckett, and Eugene Ionesco and also maintained a close working relationship with Canada's famed communication theorist Marshall McLuhan. In 1995 Etrog was named a Member of the Order of Canada and in 1996 was appointed Chevalier of Arts and Letters by the Government of France.
