Isaac Soreau Art for Sale and Sold Prices

Still life painter, Früchtemaler, b. 1604 - d. 1638

Still life painter Isaac Soreau was born in Hanau, Germany, a town near Frankfurt. He was the son of the famous sculptor, wool merchant, city planner, and architect, Daniel Soreau. Daniel Soreau had emigrated from Tournai, Belgium to Frankfurt at some point before 1586, the year he became a citizen of the town. Isaac must have learned something about the art of painting from his father. Isaac's father passed away in 1619 and his studio passed into the hands of Sebastian Stosskopf. Isaac and his brother, Peter (1604- before 1672) trained under Sebastian. Soreau studied at the studio between 1619 and the time he moved to Antwerp, sometime around or after 1626. In Antwerp, Soreau passed his time working or studying in the studio of the painter Jacob van Hulsdonck (1582-1647). Many of Isaac’s still life paintings show profound influence from this Antwerp master. Isaac returned to Frankfurt and continued to paint incredibly detailed and brilliantly colored still life paintings of fruit in baskets on a table. The canvasses often featured fruit overflowing from the basket and spilling onto the table. Soreau paid attention to minute details in his work, often including insects painted with precision in oil on copper.
