Ressaidar Badlu Singh was a recipient of the Victoria Cross. On 23" September 1918 on the west bank of the River Jordan, Palestine, when his squadron was charging a strong enemy position, Ressaidar Badlu Singh of the 14th Murray's Jat Lancers realised that heavy casualties were being inflicted from a small hill occupied by machine-guns and 200 infantry. Without any hesitation he collected six other ranks and with entire disregard of danger he charged and captured the position. He was mortally wounded on the very top of the hill when capturing one of the machine-guns single handed, but all the guns and infantry had surrendered to him before he died. He was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross. (92) catalogue raisonée of the prints and etchings of George and Eileen Soper, published in 1995. The citation for the Victoria Cross appeared in the London Gazette of 27th November 1918 and reads as follows: "For most conspicuous bravery and self-sacrifice on the morning of 23r September 1918, when his squadron charged a strong enemy position on the west bank of the River Jordan, between the river and Kh. Es Samariveh village. "On nearing the position Ressaidar Badlu Singh realized that the squadron was suffering casualties from a small hill on the left front occupied by machine guns and 200 infantry. Without the slightest hesitation he collected six other ranks and with the greatest dash and an entire disregard of danger charged and captured the position, thereby saving very heavy casualties to the squadron. He was mortally wounded on the very top of the hill when capturing one of the machine guns single-handed, but all the machine guns and infantry had surrended to him.

Lots 142-149 The following eight lots have been removed from Wildings in Welwyn, Hertfordshire, formerly the home of George and Eileen Soper. George Soper's work comprises a significant and evocative record of rural life before the Second World War. His youngest daughter, Eileen, was a successful and popular illustrator and printmaker, perhaps most fondly remembered for her illustrations for the entire series of Enid Blyton's 'Adventures of the Famous Five'. What is not so well known about Eileen is that she was a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Engravers (RMS) and a member of the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA), with many books on wildlife and paintings and drawings to her name. Her elder sister, Eva, delighted the public with her exquisite models of birds, produced by the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company for 49 years. The Sopers were a remarkable family, George being a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (RE), whose artistic achievements have now been recognized. A collection of over 700 original works covering the range of the family's output has been designated by the Arts Council as being Pre-Eminent and therefore considered of National Importance. A home is being sought for The Soper Collection. For more information on the family's artistic range refer to the Charity's website: www.thesopercollection.org George Soper (1870-1942) Eileen pen and ink 17 x 12cm; A shepherd and his flock in an open landscape pen and ink 17 x 12cm; Figures and horses beside a river with a ruin beyond pen and ink 16.5 x 23cm; Washerwoman pencil 13 x 9.5cm (4) Provenance: Wildings, Welwyn, Hertfordshire; the first three works bear a note stating they were purchased in a folio from a 'major London auction'; the pencil sketch was purchased from a 1966 exhibition of works from the artist's studio.
