          Est: $2,000 - $3,000

ÉLIZABETH SONREL (1874-1953) [THE SEASONS]. Group of 4 posters. Circa 1900. Each approximately 17x12 inches, 43¼x32½ cm. Condition varies, generally A- / B+: small losses, tears and time-staining in margins. Paper. Élizabeth Sonrel was a painter who exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français (winning the bronze medal in their 1900 exhibition). She was also under contract with the printer Champenois, who, together with Alphonse Mucha, invented the genre of decorative panels. In addition to Mucha, Champenois employed many artists to design these panels; Sonrel was his favorite and one of the best, as indicated by the six francs Champenois charged for her panels, which was comparable to price charged for panels by Mucha. She brought her own style to her projects, which, while more academic and less sensuous than Mucha's, are always very delicate, with careful attention to details and a good sense of color. She created many sets of panels with the same themes as Mucha, "The Seasons," and "The Flowers," and also came up with ideas of her own, like "The Birds." These four seasons are elaborate compositions with a mixture of floral elements that surround antique-inspired portraits of young ladies. A tour-de-force of French Art Nouveau.

ARTIST: ÉLISABETH SONREL (1874-1953) SIZE: Each approx.: 11 x 26 in./28 x 66 cm DESCRIPTION: This lot includes two of the decorative panels in Sonrel’s Flowers set: Fleur de Montagne and Fleur des Eaux. As opposed to many of the other similar plates executed in this style, there is no real attempt to personify the flora with the women present. Rather, they compliment one another in such a splendiferous fashion, be they blond or brunette, mountain or water flower, that any sort of additional allegory would be a useless redundancy. And at times such as this, it’s quite obvious that a natural beauty need not be anything more than just that. (2) (Art Nouveau)

          Le Midi. 1901.

          Est: $2,000 - $2,500

ARTIST: ÉLISABETH SONREL (1874-1953) SIZE: 20 1/4 x 27 1/2 in./51.5 x 69.8 cm DESCRIPTION: Sonrel’s decorative panels are a bit more painterly than Mucha’s, but they’re equally as effective as the better known artist’s work. Having previously applied her talents to flowers (see PAI-XLII, 460) and birds (see PAI-XLIII, 539), she turns her attention to seasonal concerns, the second such personification we’ve seen from the artist (the first came in PAI-XXXIX, 469). Here, she explores the quiet solitude of summertime solemnity with the casual loveliness of a thought-absorbed, long-necked beauty pausing in an apple grove by the sea. Born in Tours, Sonrel was quite possibly the daughter of painter Stephane Sonrel, from whom she received her early artistic guidance. To further her studies, she moved to Paris where she became the pupil of Jules Lefebvre at his École des Beaux-Arts. Beginning in 1893, she exhibited her work at the Salon des Artistes Français, especially large watercolors of idealized women that have both a certain Pre-Raphaelite intensity and an affinity for French symbolism, inspired by Arthurian romance, biblical subjects, archaic legends, and medieval love. Although Sonrel’s output was known during her lifetime, it’s only in the past twenty years or so that her work has again received the attention it deserves. (Art Nouveau)

Été & Hiver : Two Decorative Panels. 1901.

          Est: $2,500 - $3,000

ARTIST: ELISABETH SONREL (1874-1953) SIZE: Each: 19 3/8 x 27 5/8 in./49.2 x 70 cm DESCRIPTION: Sonrel’s decorative panels are a bit more painterly than Mucha’s, but they’re equally as effective as the better known artist’s work. Having previously applied her talents to flowers (see PAI-XXXII, 507) and birds (see No. 539), she turns her attention to seasonal concerns, the second of such personifications we’ve seen from the artist (the first came in PAI-XXXIX, 469). Here, she explores the quiet solitude of summertime and wintertime solemnity with the casual loveliness of thought-absorbed beauties pausing to take in the view. Born in Tours, Sonrel was quite possibly the daughter of painter Stephane Sonrel, from whom she received her early artistic guidance. To further her artistic studies, she moved to Paris where she became the pupil of Jules Lefebvre at his Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Beginning in 1893, she exhibited her work at the Salon des Artistes Français; she focused on large watercolors of idealized women that have both a certain Pre-Raphaelite intensity and an affinity for French symbolism, inspired by Arthurian romance, biblical subjects, archaic legends, and medieval love. Although Sonrel's output was known during her lifetime, it’s only more recently that her work has again received the attention it deserves. (2) (Art Nouveau)
