Matted, glazed and framed. sheet 9-1/4" x 7-1/4", framed 17" x 13" Provenance: Previously in the collection of Mark Bercier, New Orleans, Louisiana; Estate of Howell Dean Coe III, New Orleans, Louisiana. Exhibited: "Drawn from New Orleans: Twentieth-Century Works from Private Collections", Newcomb Art Gallery, Tulane University, April 24-June 30, 2007. Notes: Keith Sonnier grew up in the Cajun community of Mamou, part of Evangeline Parish in south central Louisiana. Raised in a Catholic, French-speaking home, his father owned a hardware store, and his mother was a florist and local singer whom Sonnier described as "very devout and also very eccentric." After graduation in 1963 from University of Southwestern Louisiana, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, he studied painting in Paris, and then enrolled at Rutgers University, where he studied with contemporary artists Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Morris. Sonnier achieved early recognition from the New York art scene during the late 1960s, including exhibiting at the Whitney Museum of Art. Based on a Cajun expression "Ba-O-Ba" meaning "color bath" or "light bath", Sonnier combined colored neon and reflective glass shapes into abstract sculptures. Sonnier infused his sculptures with a sense of poetry in contrast to the seriousness of post-Minimal art.

KEITH SONNIER (Mamou 1941–2020 Southhampton) Frankfurt Dyad III. 1989. Light installation. Neon, glass, mirror and aluminium. 205 × 203 × 16 cm. Provenance: - Galerie St. Gilles, Zurich. - Private collection Germany. Keith Sonnier was together with Dan Flavin, James Turrell and Richard Serra one of the founders of "New Sculpture" in the 1960s. The conventional concept of sculpture was expanded to include process-based elements using industrial and ephemeral materials. From early on, Sonnier became interested in neon light and used it for his installations. Of course, the neon tubes themselves form part of the compositions, but the light and its effect on the space also belong to the sculpture. The classic sculpture plinth is replaced by the wall and floor on which the works are either installed, or referred to by the light. Large installations such as "Ba-o-Ba Berlin" at the Neue Nationalgalerie or the "Lightway" at Munich Airport demonstrate to great effect how these works encompass an entire space, whether outside or inside, and provide passers-by with a unique experience, often without being aware of it. Sonnier uses his art to interpret society and culture, and with his installations he seeks to reveal stimuli or new aspects within culture, and to endow the viewer with an appreciation of the world. --------------- KEITH SONNIER (Mamou 1941–2020 Southhampton) Frankfurt Dyad III. 1989. Lichtinstallation. Neonröhren, Glas, Spiegel und Aluminium. 205 × 203 × 16 cm. Provenienz: - Galerie St. Gilles, Zürich. - Privatsammlung Deutschland.

- Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

On the occasion of his exhibition in Krefeld in 1979, Keith Sonnier gave some inside on the meaning of his BA-O-BA series: "BA-O-BA is a Haitian French slang word which can mean color or light bath. It is used to describe the effects of light on the skin or body - as to feel the effect of moonlight which suggests the physical and physiological pull of natural or artificial light. The Ba-O-BA works were begun in 1969 and were designed as works that were visual and physical in appearance. As one moves past or around the works they alter your perception and tint your persona. This body of work was the bases for most of my early video tapes and films, because the pieces could exist in so many variations of form and colour combinations. I use video to record the changes. The pieces became movable sets very much in the theatrical sense. The effects the work had on the audience, became as important as the actual work, suggesting an interaction that was not only based on visual means. Sound and physical movements could be used as an element to assist in the perception of the work. I record the BA-O-BA work on tape, electronic colors and computerized forms of pictogram images were organize around a series of materials. The redrawings of these BA-O-BA pictograms helped to expand the variations of the forms as well as to freeze the images, to stop them in time or even to translate them into some permanent sculptural state." (extract from the exhibition catalogue 'Keith Sonnier. Argon- und Neon-Arbeiten', 1979). Provenance: -Collection Helga & Walther Lauffs, Bad Honnef, Germany. -Corporate collection, the Netherlands. Exhibited: Krefeld, Germany, Museum Haus Lange Krefeld, 'Keith Sonnier. Argon- und Neon-Arbeiten', 8 April - 20 Mai 1979 (illustrated in the exhibition catalogue on the title page).
