SONG YU, PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN IN QIPAO China, 2006 Oil on canvas, framed. Visible size 99x79 cm (112.5x92.5x4.5 cm with frame). Signed and dated lower right. With slight traces of age. Song Yu (b.1973) was born in Beijing. He works currently as a teacher at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, specializing in figures, still lifes and landscapes. He studied under the French classicist painter Claude Yvel, and mainly focuses on classical hyper-realistic still lifes. Derzeit arbeitet er als Lehrer an der Central Academy of Fine Arts und ist auf Figuren, Stillleben und Landschaften spezialisiert. Er studierte bei dem französischen klassizistischen Maler Claude Yvel und konzentriert sich hauptsächlich auf klassische hyperrealistische Stillleben. Provenienz: Aus einer Privatsammlung in Norddeutschland, direkt vom Künstler erworben.

Provenance: - Artist's studio. - Private collection Germany. The Chinese artist Song Yu was born in Beijing in 1973. He studied at the College of Fine Arts and the Tianjin Art Academy. In his powerful still lifes, two of which we are offering at auction, he impressively combines his Chinese tradition with his fondness for Dutch still life and flower painting, and thus creates a contemporary transformation of the classic still life. The basic commonality with the Old Masters is the fine, richly detailed and precise painting style and the compositional idea. However, through the impressive use of small details, the artist achieves a combination of the Western Old Masters tradition with a modern Eastern viewpoint and brings the works into the present day. Thus, Song Yu presents his still lifes in bright, light spaces. He reduces the flowers to one type of plant, and this in turn is reduced to the extreme, as in “Green Melody”, where there is nothing but a pair of green leaves and a green pistil. He places the flowers in modern spaces, on a chair or chest of drawers. Sometimes he takes up the motifs of the still life in the background with pale, inconspicuous colours. Der Chinese Song Yu wird 1973 in Beijing geboren. Er studiert an der Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst und an der Tianjin Kunstakademie. In seinen eindrucksvollen Stillleben, von denen wir zwei anbieten, kombiniert er auf eindrückliche Weise chinesische Tradition mit seiner Vorliebe für niederländische Stillleben- und Blumenmalerei und erschafft somit eine zeitgenössische Umsetzung des klassischen Stilllebens. Die grundsätzliche Gemeinsamkeit mit den Altmeistern ist die feine, detailreiche und präzise Malerei und die kompositorische Idee. Aber es gelingt dem Künstler eindrücklich durch Details die altmeisterliche, westliche Tradition mit einer modernen, östlichen Sichtweise zu kombinieren und die Werke in unsere Zeit zu holen. So stellt Song Yu seine Stillleben in helle, lichte Räume. Er reduziert die Blumen auf eine Pflanzenart, die wiederum an sich, wie in „Green Melody“, extrem reduziert ist – ein paar grüne Blätter und grüne Blütenstempel sind alles. Er plaziert die Blumen in moderne Räume auf einem Stuhl oder einer Kommode. Teils greift er im Hintergrund die Motive der Stillleben in blassen, unauffälligen Farben wieder auf. Die einzelnen Objekte, wie man an unserem Beispiel schön sehen kann, schlagen die Brücke nach Asien.

Signed and dated lower left: Song Yu 2008-4, also signed in Chinese. 80 x 100 cm. Provenance: - Artisti's studio. - Private collection Germany. The Chinese artist Song Yu was born in Beijing in 1973. He studied at the School of Applied Arts and at the Tianjin Art Academy. In his formidable still lifes, two of which are offered here at auction, he combines to great effect his Chinese tradition, with a fondness for Dutch still life and flower painting and creates thereby a contemporary rendering of the classic still life. The fundamental link with the Old Masters is the fine, richly detailed and precise style of painting. The compositional features also concur: either a vase of flowers as in Green Melody (Lot 3509), or a still life with various scattered items mostly in a table like the present work. Song Yu assembles his still lifes, however, in bright, light spaces. Sometimes in the background he picks out the motifs of the still life in pale, understated colours. The individual objects, as can be seen so well in this example, create the link with Asia. He employs Asian porcelain and furniture, as well as elements such as the dragon. The still life of flowers is brought into the present day with the use of the modern and almost abstract form of the glass vase. In his works, Song Yu succeeds in combining the Western tradition of the old masters, with the modern tradition of the East. Die einzelnen Objekte, wie man an unserem Beispiel schön sehen kann, schlagen die Brücke nach Asien. Er nutzt asiatisches Porzellan und Möbel, aber auch Objekte wie den Drachen. Das Blumenstillleben wird durch die moderne, fast abstrakte Glasvase in unsere Zeit geholt. In seinen Werken schafft es Song Yu eindrücklich die altmeisterliche westliche Tradition mit der modernen, östlichen zu verbinden. Durch diesen Gegensatz, den er kompositorisch wie handwerklich meisterlich umsetzt, entstehen Werke von grosser Präsenz und einzigartiger Stimmung.
