His batiks follow the usual themes of rural life, and this work is an imaginative rendition of alluring damsels set against a moonlit fishing village landscape. The mysterious atmosphere of night is evoked through the misty, purple background and light-glowing hues, suggesting a sense of depth and perspective. Tan studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore and won the 2nd Prize (Batik) in the 1969 Salon Malaysia with Flying Kite, which is now in the collection of the National Art Gallery Malaysia. Tan also won 1st Prize in the Malayan Young Artists competition in 1964. He took part in the Adelaide Expo when Georgetown and Adelaide sealed their ‘sister cities’ relationship in 1974.

As an artist that frequently uses her thoughts, emotions and feelings as substance for her abstract work, her artworks usually turn out to be a motley of aesthetic mayhem. Such as the matters of the heart and mind, it is never clear, rarely uncluttered and most definitely not immaculate. “We live our true lives in the depths of our hearts, not in the superficial masks of personality which we show to the world,” said Dato’ Sharifah. She exhibits the true matters of the heart, mind and soul, how the thought processes are never muted and never silent, always showing their garish colours deep within. It is a piece that says “although outside you may seem calm and collected, the inside is a different story”. This piece resonates vibrancy, liveliness and vivacity. It is done in her usual loud-on-loud and contrasting colours, featuring daring streaks, blocks and lines to handsomely frame the bold-coloured fragments and shapes. It is a discourse between nature and man, and it can be likened to seeking solitude in nature, the greens, blues and warm washes of red each representing different types of the elements of flora and fauna. Not one to shy away from colours, the artist’s works are often described as lyrically symbolic featuring a myriad of colours.

The setting is simple, and everyday. It is something that we commonly see. However, Tan Thean Song manages to turn a simple scenery into something completely otherworldly and arresting. With elaborate batik details, patterns and shapes, the congruent tones and gradual change of warm hues of the backdrop, it seems almost spiritual. He freezes a disorderly scene into a single, serene moment that seems to glow. Tan Thean Song studied art at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, and specialises in painting with Chinese ink and watercolour. His painting ÔPlaying KiteÕ is a permanent collection of the National Art Gallery in Kuala Lumpur, and said painting also won the second prize in batik medium in the Salon Malaysia Art Competition in 1969. In 1964, he won the first and consolation prizes in the Malaysian Young Artists Art Competition.
