FREDERICK SOMMER - Dead Coyotes, 1941

      Est: $12,000 - $18,000

This rare variant of Sommer’s iconic Coyotes is a mesmerizing tapestry of tones. Sommer’s unique style of contact printing allowed him to maintain information in every shadow and highlight, even in the harsh, desert sunlight as is the case here. Sommer’s series of dead coyotes, along with animal organs, limbs, and so forth, was far before his postmodern counterparts like Sally Mann and Joel-Peter Witkin, who would make similar series on the aspects of reality that we purposefully disregard in disgust. This print, one of three known (with one in MoMA), was likely made after 1960. It is signed and dated, as well as titled and dated in pencil mount verso.
