Elke Sommer Sold at Auction Prices

Painter

As a child, Artist Elke Sommer studied painting under Peter Bina. Much of painter Elke Sommer's work is bright and cheerful, but she has also created more sombre pieces, often including a crucifix as a reminder of her pastor father. Marc Chagall is considered one of her prime influences. In 1968, Elke Sommer, artist, was introduced to the public with an exhibition at Munich's Galerie Schumacher. She has since exhibited her work in 39 one-woman shows in Europe and the United States. In 1985, she hosted a 13 episode TV show, Painting with Elke Sommer, teaching viewers how to create a painting from sketch to finished piece.     Titled, 'Botanica 2001', lithograph numbered 110/250, signed lower right. Elke Sommer was born in Berlin, Germany on November 5, 1940. Sommer began painting watercolors as a teenager. While vacationing in Italy, she won a beauty title ("Miss Viareggio Turistica") which caught the attention of film director, Vittorio De Sica who cast her in his films. She became a sex symbol in Europe and by the early 1960s she was working in films in Hollywood. When not working in movies and television she painted as a hobby. In 1965 she held her first one-woman show at the McKenzie Galleries in Beverly Hills. Her paintings appear to be inspired by the works of Marc Chagall. Overall Size: 29 3/4 x 37 7/8 in. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as grading can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired.
