          Edith Somerville,  Irish 1858-1949 -  The Irish Horse Dealer;  pencil on paper, with studio stamp lower left, 14.1 x 11 cm  Provenance: with The Neptune Gallery, Dublin (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame)  Note: the present work is a sketch for an illustration to the chapter 'Fanny Fritz's Gamble' from 'All on the Irish Shore, 1903' (according to the inscription in another hand on the reverse of the frame).  The artist was a novelist and illustrator who published under the name 'E. Œ. Somerville', writing with her cousin 'Martin Ross' (Violet Martin) under the pseudonym 'Somerville and Ross'.

          § Edith Oenone Somerville (Irish, 1858-1949) House Boat on the Shannon signed lower left with initials "EOS" oil on panel h:15 w: 22 cm Other Notes: Edith Anna Oenone Somerville (2 May 1858 – 8 October 1949) was an Irish novelist who habitually signed herself as "E. Œ. Somerville". She wrote in collaboration with her cousin "Martin Ross" (Violet Martin) under the pseudonym "Somerville and Ross". Together they published a series of fourteen stories and novels, the most popular of which were The Real Charlotte, and The Experiences of an Irish R. M., published in 1899. Somerville was a devoted sportswoman who in 1903 became Master of the West Carbery Foxhounds. She was also active in the suffragist movement, corresponding with Dame Ethel Smyth. She exhibited her pictures in Dublin and in London between 1920 and 1938 and was active as an illustrator of children's picture books and sporting picture books.
