    ▲ Theodore Howard Somervell (1890-1975) The Dolomite mountains inscribed with initials and indistinctly inscribed 'N. Bran... dolom...' and dated '1968' l.l., watercolour and gouache over pencil 26.5 x 35cm Provenance: The Collection of David and Sandy Fuller. David was a director of the National Horseracing Museum and a successful fine art consultant. He offered his expertise to leading galleries and auction houses, including Sotheby's and Christie's, and was a regular visitor and friend of Sworders for many years. Condition Report: Framed: 50 x 58cm Presents well overall. There are some thunderbugs trapped between the mount and the glazing however the work itself does not appear to be affected. Not viewed out of frame.

    Signed in the lower left and dated 1929. Matted and framed under glass, H 12.25", W 15.25". Theodore Howard Somervell was a British mountaineer, surgeon, artist and missionary. Somervell's intrepid life took him far and wide. From serving as a surgeon on the Western Front during the First World War, to the heights of Mt. Everest during the 1922 and 1924 expeditions. For the 1924 expedition, he was awarded a gold medal at the Winter VIII Olympiade in Chamonix for achievements in mountaineering and the record heights achieved in the expedition held until 1952. Somervell also worked as a professor and surgeon in India from 1923 to 1949, publishing a book on his experiences titled 'Knife and Life in India'.     Theodore Howard Somervell (1890 - 1975) Oil on board, signed lower left, measures 7.5 x 6 and 10.5 x 9 inches w/frame. Theodore Howard Somervell OBE FRCS was an English surgeon, mountaineer, painter and missionary who was a member of two expeditions to Mount Everest in the 1920s. He was born in Kendal, Westmorland, and was a member of The British Mount Everest Expeditions in 1922 and 1924. He formed a close friendship with George Mallory and the two famously read Shakespeare to one another in their tent at night. During the 1924 expedition Somervell along with Edward Norton reached an altitude of 8,570 meters, a record which would not be broken with certainty until 1952. He is believed to have painted 126 pictures relating to the 1922 and 1924 Everest expeditions. There was an exhibition at The Abbot Hall Gallery in April 1979 of Somervell's paintings of the Himalayas and Westmorland.
