Mat Ali Mat Som (b. Selangor, 1975) Hang Jebat, 2010

          Est: RM19,500 - RM25,000

The exceptional rendition portrays a fabled warrior from fifteenth century Malacca. Executed on metal, the work shows Jebat’s heroic posture and unwavering spirit moulded into three-dimensional form. Mat Ali Mat Som focuses on the anatomy of the figure with extended arms and bent knees, encapsulated in a powerful stance, poised to fight with all the might. Usman Awang’s 1961 play titled The Death Of A Warrior portrayed Jebat as a valiant hero. The one-act play challenged traditional notions of the epic and conveys a universal theme, which according to Usman, “Jebat symbolizes all young people who bravely struggle for truth and justice even with their lives.” Like Raja Shahriman and Amron Omar dealing with silat, the battle is more internalised — an endless burning battle to resolve conflicts and achieve one’s end through brute force. His works are forged in an alloy of tin, aluminium, zinc and iron as well as natural stone pedestals that form an integral part of his work. Mat Ali obtained his BFA at UiTM in 1997. His recognition includes winning Third Prize in the Kuala Lumpur Sculpture Contest and an Honourable Mention in the Phillip Morris Malaysia Art Awards, Kuala Lumpur. Since 2009, Mat Ali had a number of shows at prominent galleries in Malaysia. MAT ALI MAT SOM : Pertarungan #2, 2017

          Est: RM10,000 - RM15,000

Mat Ali Mat Som has a passion for everything about silat, a traditional Malay martial art. Being able to share it is a satisfaction he cannot describe in words. Not only has he learnt the martial art, and studied its history and moves, he is now sharing his sculptures based on the art. “I remember making my first metal sculpture – a keris – after watching a television documentary on the keris when I was 10 years old. I made the keris using an iron pipe in the garage of my parents’ home in Ampang,” said Mat Ali. He was a designer at Royal Selangor for 19 years before quitting in 2016. Indeed, the KL-born artist is no stranger to silat. It is, for want of a better term, a family affair, a passion Mat Ali shares with his wife and three children. Now based in Tanjung Malim, Perak, Mat Ali reveals he takes his silat gayung training seriously.

          Nov. 03, 2019

          Mazli Mat Som (b. 1938 - d. 1990) Malay Boy, 1970

          Est: RM20,000 - RM35,000

There must be a special occasion for this Malay boy to be clean-scrubbed and all dressed up in satiny blue Baju Melayu with songkok in place, seated on a polished wooden chair meant for an adult. Hari Raya, religious school classes or even the first day of proper school term? He looks big enough to have gone through the sunat (circumcision) ceremony of every Muslim boy by the age of seven. There is a slight tremor in his eyes as he looks at camera, in this case, his portrait artist. If Yati (Mazli Mat Som’s iconic painting, 1964) is an epitome of female Malay adolescence, this boy is the male counterpart. Whoever this boy is, he has travelled as a painting by figurative icon Mazli Mat Som with the collector to Denmark, and is now back on Malaysian shores. Props (furniture) is spartan and the pastel shades as backdrop afford a homey, intimate aura exuding innocence. This is a major piece of an already difficult to get Mazli, and surely ranks as a gender companion to Yati. Interestingly, it’s tempting to compare this Malay Boy to Khalil Ibrahim’s oil, Portrait Of A Boy (1966, sold in Henry Butcher Art Auction Oct 28, 2018), in school uniform, with the insouciance of childhood. Mazli Mat Som, who succeeded Dato’ Hoessein Enas to helm the Angkatan Pelukis SeMalaysia (previously SeMenanjung), is best known for his two iconic works in the collection of the National Art Gallery: Menanti Nelayan (1961) and Yati (1964). As a protégé of Dato’ Hoessein, he upheld and promoted the best figurative traditions but died five years before his mentor. Among those prominent active during his time were Idris Salam, Mohd Sallehuddin, Sabtu Mohd Yusof and his wife Hamidah Suhaimi, who painted similarly well in the figurative tradition.

          Est: RM4,000 - RM6,000

This set consists of 4 poignant drawing studies of silat gestures, and Keris Tajong, which serves as a tribute to legendary warriors from the Malayan lineage. The keris is an asymmetrical dagger with distinctive blade patterns laboriously created by iron laminations. The keris consists of three parts, the blade (wilah), hilt (hulu) and sheath (warangka). Its distinctive wavy blade encapsulates the swift movement of the serpent, while straight blades are earlier forms derived from the Majapahit era. Throughout the history of the archipelago, the keris is a symbol of heroism, martial bravery and authority. The accompanied keris has ornate Pattani hilts in the form of a kingfisher.   Silat, a class of martial arts which originates from Southeast Asia has various styles and schools, with techniques focusing on strikes, joint manipulation, throws and bladed weaponry. In Silat Studies, the fixed hand positions, reminiscent of a slow dance are integral to the silat Melayu.   Mat Ali Mat Som received his Bachelor of Fine Art at University Institute Technology Mara (UiTM) in 1997. His awards include winning Third prize in the KL Sentral Sculpture Contest (1997) and Honorable Mention at the Phillip Morris Malaysia Arts Awards, Kuala Lumpur (1999). In Mat Ali Mat Som's Dendam Tak Sudah exhibition catalogue, Professor Dr. Zakaria Ali wrote in an essay titled The Sculptures of Mat Ali Mat Som: "The fighter in Langkah Rahsia Nampak Berpunca (Visible Origin of Secret Steps), finds most congenial to develop the crouching style, one that lets him cling to the earth, unflinching and formidable like the roots of ancient trees, like the rocks of volcanic eruptions. Every fighter strives to have a secret set of steps his enemy least anticipates. In friendly silat exhibition or performances these steps are seldom displayed, if ever. Only when one is cornered, would they be employed; even then, most sparingly. They are dear to the fighter who has practiced long and hard to acquire them."
