ALBERT SOLON (1897-1973) AIR FRANCE / GOLDEN CLIPPER. 1933. 39 1/2x24 1/2 inches, 100 1/4x62 1/4 cm. France-Affiches, Paris. Condition A: minor creases in margins; slight darkening at top left edge. Paper. Solon, a self-taught artist, designed posters for several different airline companies, starting with Franco-Roumaine in 1930, then Farman, Lufthansa and KLM. His most important airline client was Air France, beginning in 1933, for whom he designed a handful of boldly-colored posters in his inimitable Art Deco style. Here, combining dynamic typography with the speed and depiction of a Wibault 282.T12, he portrays the Golden Clipper on its speedy route between Paris and London, illuminating the entire poster in the golden rays of the sun, as if to emphasize its name. ALBERT SOLON (1897-1973). FARMAN AIR LINES. 1926. 36¾x25¼ inches, 93¼x64 cm. West, Courbevoie.

        Est: $2,500 - $3,500

ALBERT SOLON (1897-1973) FARMAN AIR LINES. 1926. 36 3/4x25 1/4 inches, 93 1/4x64 cm. West, Courbevoie. Condition A-: expertly-repaired tears and minor restoration in margins; repaired tear at right edge, slightly into image. Solon specialized in aviation posters, for a time, working under contract with Farman Airlines, and later went on to design memorable images for Air France, KLM and Lufthansa. His design work for Farman consistently utilized an inimitable, unembellished Art Deco style. Here, he depicts the F-170 Jabiru (Stork), an eight-seater with an elegantly appointed interior cabin. It is depicted taking flight above the curvature of the earth and soaring up past the birds from which it takes its name. The Farman company was founded in 1919 and was a forerunner of the Société Générale de Transport Aérien (SGTA). In 1933, the SGTA was one of five airline companies that merged to form Air France. • St. Raphaël. 1935.
        Jul. 20, 2021

        St. Raphaël. 1935.

        Est: $6,000 - $8,000

ARTIST: ALBERT SOLON (1897-1973) SIZE: 62 1/8 x 45 3/8 in./158 x 115.2 cm PRINTER: Imp. St. Raphaël, Paris DESCRIPTION: Solon takes St. Raphaël’s waiters—originally designed by Loupot—out of the bar and out for a drive. Though he stays true to Loupot’s color scheme, Solon has added more human details to the men’s faces. The design is noted as “d’après Ray,” though we’re unsure of who Ray might be. Interestingly, we know of two more 1935 designs for St. Raphaël with the same characters; one, by Hardy, shows the waiters on water skis and is “d’après Ray,” while another anonymous design with the waiters on skis is “d’après Solon.” It would appear these artists were engaged in a bit of creative tug-of-war. We hope one of our astute readers will resolve the mystery for us. (Art Deco; Alcohol)

Albert Solon (1897-1973) LIGNES FARMAN / LES GRANDES EXPRESS AÉRIENS. 1930.

        Est: $3,000 - $4,000

ALBERT SOLON (1897-1973) LIGNES FARMAN / LES GRANDES EXPRESS AÉRIENS. 1930. 39 1/2x26 1/4 inches, 100 1/4x66 1/2 cm. Ch. Egler, Paris. Condition A- / B+: minor expertly-repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins; slight time-staining at edges; small loss in upper left corner. Solon specialized in aviation posters. For a while he worked under contract with Farman Airlines, and went on to design memorable, Art Deco images for Air France, KLM and Lufthansa. Henri Farman (1874-1958) was an aviation pioneer who, in 1908, was the first man to fly a one kilometer circle on an observed course. Along with his brother Maurice, he was also among the first involved in the aircraft industry and the world of civil aviation. In this poster one can't help but see an echo of Cassandre's Nord Express, from 1927, in the color palette and perspective of the locomotive and telegraph wires. Of course here the plane is the subject, soaring far above the "sluggish" engine. The Farman company was founded in 1919 and was a forerunner of the Société Générale de Transport Aérien (SGTA). In 1933, the SGTA was one of five airline companies that merged to form Air France. L'Histoire de l'Avaition p. 84.

The Farman brothers founded this company in 1919. Solon was its official posterist before its merger with Air Union, CIDNA, and Air Orient in 1933, and he continued to design for the new company that emerged, Air France. (Aviation)
