Sokol Jano (Serbian, 1909-1983) "Marriage", oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right (1974), framed (56cm x 41cm) Born 1909, in Kovacica, near Pancevo, In 1938, Jano Sokol met the peasant painter Martin Paluska, who taught him the rudiments of painting. In 1952, he founded the Kovacica peasant painters group, following the example of many other villages in Yugoslavia, where painting by ordinary people was enjoying a singular success.
