In vivid impasto brushstrokes, the German painter Alfred Sohn-Rethel has captured a rich bouquet of spring flowers in an earthenware vessel. Dark purple blossoms, maybe hyacinths, contrasting with yellow tulips and daffodils. As a base for the vessel and at the same time the only hint of space serves a table with a red-blue patterned tablecloth. The result is a very decorative floral still life in brushwork characterized by late impressionism. The oil painting is signed and dated 'Alfred Sohn-Rethel' in lilac upper right. The overall condition is very good without any discoveries under UV-Light. The frame shows occasional material losses. The painting measures 70 x 50 cm, the framed dimensions are 87 x 67 cm. (fea) Alfred Sohn-Rethel (1875-1958) Alfred Sohn-Rethel (1875-1958) was born in Düsseldorf, his father was the portrait painter Carl Rudolf Sohn (1845-1908) and his mother Else, the daughter of the well-known painter Alfred Rethel (1816-1859). Sohn-Rethel began his studies in Düsseldorf, later he went to Paris. He was a member of the 'Free Association Düsseldorf artist'.
