(Florence 1492–1544) The Holy Family with Saint Francis, oil and tempera on panel, 76.5 x 58 cm, framed Provenance: Collection of the Comtesse de Benneville; her sale, Paris, June 1878 (as Marco d’Oggiono); Collection of Alphonse Wattel-Bayart (died 1906), Roubaix; his sale, Roubaix, 18 December 1906, lot 162 (as Marco d’Oggiono); sale, Mercier & Cie., Lille, 23 March 1997, lot 165 (as Giovanni Antonio Sogliani); sale, Sotheby’s, New York, 26 January 2007, lot 178A (as Giovanni Antonio Sogliani); The Alana Collection, Newark, Delaware; with Moretti, London, 2016; Private collection, England Literature: S. Reinach, Répertoire de peintures du moyen age et de la Renaissance (1280–1580), Paris 1922, vol. V, p. 122, engraved (as ‘Attribué à Oggiono – Brina. suivant Berenson’); A. Nesi, Giovanni Antonio Sogliani, in: M. Boskovits (ed.) The Alana Collection: Italian paintings and sculptures from the fourtheenth to sixteenth century, vol. 2, Florence 2011, pp. 258–262, no. 37, illustrated p. 259 (as Giovanni Antonio Sogliani, circa 1531–1536) The present panel depicts the Madonna, Saint Joseph and Saint Francis in adoration of the newborn Child, who reclines on a white cloth over a pillow of straw on which he rests his elbow. Saint Francis is depicted holding a small cross, with the wounds of the stigmata, a pledge of his devotion. In this composition Sogliani has drawn on the Florentine tradition of the late Quattrocento and early Cinquecento, popularised by his master Lorenzo di Credi (circa 1459–1537) and his pupils, and this work can be compared to Lorenzo di Credi’s Adoration of the Child dated to circa 1525, conserved in the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte in Naples (inv. no. Q48). Sogliani had already referred to the scheme adopted from Credi in an earlier panel, formerly in the church of Sant’Ignazio all’Olivella, Palermo and now in the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia, Palazzo Abatellis, Palermo. Another subsequent version, which predates the present painting, was completed as a fresco for the former Florentine convent of Santa Maria dei Candeli. The present Holy Family probably represents Sogliani’s most mature interpretation of the subject for which a date around 1531–36 has been suggested (see A. Nesi 2011 in literature). Sogliani’s youthful production unsurprisingly emulated the figurative repertoire of Lorenzo di Credi, whose workshop he had already entered in 1501. In 1515 Sogliani enrolled in the Arte dei Medici e Speziali and supposedly soon after began running his own independent workshop. In 1531 Sogliani was called to Pisa where he was commissioned to execute paintings for the cathedral, for which he was only able to complete three panels.

    • Giovanni Antonio Sogliani (Firenze 1492 – 1544) VERONICA oli
      Nov. 26, 2019

Giovanni Antonio Sogliani (Firenze 1492 – 1544) VERONICA oli

      Est: €10,000 - €15,000

The Italian Soprintendenza considers this lot to be a work of national importance and requires it to remain in Italy; it cannot therefore be exported from Italy.

NOTE Sogliano was trained by his fellow Florentine Lorenzo di Credi, working closely with his master until founding his own studio in about 1515. That he was influenced by and inspired by other contemporary artists is certain (Vasari, for example, considered him a follower of Fra Bartolomeo, while certain other works rely on del Sarto's style; he even finished a work left incomplete by that artist). His style, however, was not simply an amalgam of current trends in Florentine painting, but independent; Vasari notes that one of his designs for an altarpiece was rejected by his patrons as too modern. Everett Fahy, has seen the painting and confirmed the work to be by the artist.
