A self-taught painter, Pedro Sobrado held his first exhibition in 1959, in the Sur gallery in Santander. Two years later he moved to Paris, where he settled until 1976. In the French capital he exhibited at the Salon des Surindependants and in several galleries and, back in Spain, he showed his work in galleries in Madrid and Santander, as well as in Chicago in 1998. Sobrado is an artist who has won more awards in France than in Spain, and has been awarded the Medal of Arts, Sciences and Letters, among other honours. He is currently represented in the Fine Arts Museums of Bilbao and Santander, the Museum of Don Quixote in Guanajuato (Mexico) and in the collection of the Government of Cantabria. Gloria Garcia Lorca, niece of the poet, was born in New York during her family's exile, where she studied literature and art at Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville NY. She began her activity as an artist in Spain, exhibiting regularly in Madrid. For the last few years he has been working in the field of sculpture and, at the same time, in ceramics. She has translated El Romancero Gitano by Federico García Lorca into English with the poet Jane Durán, published by Enitharmon Press, UK in 2011. She is now working with Durán on another translation of Lorca: El Diván del Tamarit and Los Sonetos del Amor Oscuro.

PEDRO SOBRADO (Torrelavega, Cantabria, 1936). "Peasants at dusk". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 59 x 72 cm; 76 x 90 cm (frame). A self-taught painter, Pedro Sobrado held his first exhibition in 1959, in the Sur gallery in Santander. Two years later he moved to Paris, where he settled until 1976. In the French capital he exhibited at the Salon des Surindependants and in several galleries and, once in Spain, he showed his work in galleries in Madrid and Santander, as well as in Chicago in 1998. His painting is characterised by the use of a drawing of sober and forceful lines which predominates over the use of colour. However, colour does not lose prominence as it occupies large areas of the surface. His works usually show modern people developing their most social stage. Pedro Sobrado's work has achieved greater relevance in France than in Spain, as he has received more awards in France. He has received the Medal of Arts, Sciences and Letters, among other awards. He is currently represented in the Fine Arts Museums of Bilbao and Santander, the Museum of Don Quixote in Guanajuato (Mexico) and in the collection of the Government of Cantabria.
