His famous Walking Woman series - a remarkably varied array of works that was his focus from 1961 to 1967 - remains the icon of his protean oeuvre. The simple silhouetted female form appears about 200 times, solo or in multiple. She graces Snow's paintings, photography, films and, as in this superb example, his sculpture. In this form she took star turns in art galleries, on the street nationally and internationally, and most famously at Expo 67 in Montreal. Snow memorably rings the changes on the formal and conceptual possibilities of art and our perception of the world with this one image. With it he says something profound about the visual in our consciousness and in our society. The first Walking Woman pieces were exhibited in 1962 at The Isaacs Gallery in Toronto. Snow's description of these works' inception is disarmingly simple: in the early 1960s he had been occupied with surfaces and planes in abstract painting. He wanted to do something different, to play with the figure, but not in traditional naturalistic ways. He made a large cardboard cut-out of the figure we know as "Walking Woman" and placed it initially on a gallery wall. But, typical of Snow's genius, two radical thoughts ensued: first, that his stencil allowed him to reproduce the figure endlessly, making variations inside the form while retaining the recognizable outline; secondly, Snow said that he "realized that [the form] could be anywhere.....in the world." The Walking Woman helped to lead art out of the protocols, securities and privileges of the gallery onto the street. Sculptural versions such as Sideway performed this escape most effectively. Sideway asserts and then plays with its three-dimensionality. It is massively thick or deep, a manifestly physical slab rather than a simple image. Yet by painting the image's surfaces of the aluminum form in vibrant green and red, Snow takes the sculpture back into the realm of painting. From straight on (rather than sideways), we could be looking at a two-dimensional painting. Snow never lets us rest with one viewpoint; his ethos is one of "both/and," not "either/or." The social and spatial presence of Sideway are crucial to its potency. We can, of course, move around the walking figure even while she seems to stride towards or away from us. And if we catch a glimpse of her as "just" a painting from one perspective, we are reminded by the assertive platform on which Snow places her that she exists in the round. The social dimensions are again emphasized by the doubleness of Sideway. "She" is a twin, but of the fraternal sort, ironically, given the difference in colour applied by Snow to the iconic outline. And lest we think that we, the audience, control her through our looking, it is also clear in this classic example of Snow's wit that she/they could as easily ignore us and simply look at one another. We thank Mark Cheetham, Professor of Art History at the University of Toronto, for contributing the above essay.

Based on ideas generated from a cardboard cut-out of the walking woman form, which he created as part of a series intended to consist only of five or six works, Snow became interested in the possibilities that this large form presented as a stencil. His explorations of it were many and inventive, and were the sole focus of his work for a period of six years. On canvas and paper, flat sheets of metal and glass, and as a subject for film, she was folded, cut out, draped on dowels, silkscreened into prints and reproduced on T-shirts. She is always the same, yet always different, whether she was painted, sculpted, laser-cut in steel or taken out and placed into the public environment. Whether elongated, distorted, reversed in a mirror image, expanded or shrunk in this iconic series of works, her image challenges our perception of the human form.

A master of media, Snow works in film, video, photography, sound, installation, painting and sculpture, and informing each mode with understanding gained from his exploration of the others. He comments, ".....my paintings are done by a filmmaker, sculpture by a musician, films by a painter.....". With a sly sense of humour, Snow makes art that probes perception, consciously engaging the viewer in his questioning of the act of viewing itself. When asked about how the work Two fits within his oeuvre, Snow connects this early painting to other works from the early 1960s, such as Theory of Love, in the collection of the Art Gallery of Ontario. Pared down to binaries of positive/negative, foreground/background and push/pull, the piece becomes purely about surface - as the artist states, it "...becomes an object, becomes sculpture." With Two, Snow used a stencil to create the rectangular opening into the central dark red mass, a technique that was to figure prominently in his further explorations of the foreground/background binary in his iconic Walkin Woman series. The reds that dominate the surface are broken by a tracery of subtle craquelure, exposing a dark blue ground. As the painting has aged, Snow's intentional craquelure has evolved, and in his view the result is either a success or failure, based on the viewer's perspective. However, Snow's humorous delivery of his comments on the work made it clear that he considers it a success.

In this prodigious enterprise, the object of his vision is of a kind of Everywoman, a form so simple and direct that this anonymous female seems somehow familiar to all who gaze upon her. We have seen Snow's Walking Woman in many costumes - brightly hued or subtly monochromatic, in soft cotton or unyielding aluminum - and in Green Skirt she is painted on canvas in subtle tones of one hue, her body moving forward in graceful mid-stride. First exhibited in Snow's 1962 solo exhibition at the Poindexter Gallery in New York City, Green Skirt entered the private collection of Elinor Poindexter, until it was acquired from her in 1985 following its' exhibition at the Agnes Etherington Gallery, Kingston in 1983. As early as 1972, Paul Duval wrote that, in the Walking Woman series, Snow "...plays upon [his subject] with all the skills and wit at his command without once breaking the original pattern. To devote a large part of one's career to searching out the pictorial possibilities of such a set piece requires an almost puritanical dedication and a sort of intellectual bent, qualities which Snow reveals in all of his undertakings. Snow's wit is not of the bon mot sort, but the deeply considered, though novel, commentary of a committed classic artist." Like all of Snow's Walking Women, Green Skirt, while enigmatic, is easily accessible to all viewers and yet firmly holds its place as one of a series of important conceptual works created by a celebrated artist. Whoever she may be, she is a woman with roots firmly planted in the late 20th century, still striding confidently into the 21st.
