In 1915-1916, she was notably commissioned by the famous botanist and traveller, Henry John Elwes, to paint flowers which he had collected on his trips to the Himalaya and Korea. She went on to work at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, painting plant portraits for Sir Isaac Bayley Balfour, Professor of Botany at the University of Edinburgh. She studied lithography under Frank Morley Fletcher and, in 1921, she came to work at Kew Botanic Gardens as the principal illustrator and lithographer to Curtis's Botanical Magazine. She retired in 1952, having produced over 800 plant paintings and plates. She was awarded the Victoria Medal in 1955 and her work was featured in the Kew Gardens' bicentennial exhibition 'Kew's Aid to Botany over 200 Years'.

(Very lightly soiled.) SNELLING'S OWN COPY OF THE FIRST MAJOR SUPPLEMENT TO ELWES' MONOGRAPH. Henry John Elwes (1846-1922) was Snelling's first major patron, so it was appropriate that she was asked to illustrate this supplement. She started making initial studies for the plates in 1915, and, despite her heavy workload as principal artist and lithographer to Curtis's Botanical Magazine, continued to work on the project for the next 25 years. The original drawings for the plates are now in the collection of the Lindley Library at the Royal Horticultural Society. (2)
