  • Russell Smith Soul Cop Sculpture Missoula Montana
    Feb. 08, 2025

Russell Smith Soul Cop Sculpture Missoula Montana

    Est: $800 - $1,200

Metal sculpture titled Soul Cop. 15" wide by 15" long. Made and dedicated to Darrel Johnson. Excerpt from the Missoulian Newspaper from Russell Smith; In 1975 Missoula, Montana I was working in a factory feeding a finger jointer machine. The counterculture was on the move. America was hungry for all manner of hand-made stuff and craft fairs were popping up everywhere. In an impulse of courage, I quit the sawmill, bought an acetylene torch and for the next ten years made a living -of sorts-, selling metal art in street shows. By 1985, the craft market had withered and I got a day job. Artwork went from being my livelihood to a serious hobby. Mechanical toys became my passion. My first Missoula Calendar... 1976... was given away by the bank and was very popular. I took that popularity to be enthusiasm for my work and decided to print my own calendars, sell them and make a bunch of money. Total bust! I didn't make enough to pay for the printing. Turns out what people loved was mostly having the bank give them something! I also learned that the marketing window for calendars is very small, and even with the perfect calendar at the perfect price it would be hard to get enough of them before enough people in time to recoup the investment. In the case of Russell Smith's art, the old dictum that things get better with age is cleverly proven true. Smith embodies the renaissance type artist that I often associate with the Western United States Darrel D. Johnson died October 16th 2024 at home with family by his side at age 91. He was born August 25th 1933 in Burlington Junction, Missouri to Herman and Etta (Parish) Johnson. His mother moved him from Quitman, Missouri to Council Bluff, Iowa where he was raised with two half brothers Donald and Dennis Dannat and one half sister Lolita (Dannat) Loudon. He entered the Army and served two years in Washington and California. He moved to Montana where he married Janice L. Needles, October 11th 1958, in Missoula MT. He joined the Missoula County Sheriffs Department in 1959 and transferred to the Missoula City Police Department in 1964 until he retired in 1986. He was also with the Powell County Sheriffs Department for 6 years until 1992. Darrel and his wife were very active in Cub Scouts (Pack 6), Webelos (Pack 6), and Boy Scouts (Troops 6 and 60) and, along with Sheriff John Moe, started the Annual Missoula Law Enforcement Youth Camp in 1965 held at Camp Paxson, Seeley Lake, Montana. Darrel was the coordinator for the 1st 17 years and continued supporting it for as long as his health could keep up with it. He was also a self-proclaimed Mountain Man and loved Black Powder Muskets and wrote a Cook book "Dutch Oven Cooking" For a Program called 'Becoming An Outdoors Woman.' His study in law enforcement led him to the history of Montanan's fighting crime and the Vigilante Day's of struggles with Outlaws in the Montana Territory, when lawmen were few and far between. Darrel and his wife Jan would make leather and buckskin outfits, moccasins, Walking Sticks, powder horns, beaded pouches, and Coon Skin hats. Darrel wanted to live in those days, not just read about them ("Born 100 years late"). He helped raise money for the March of Dimes in the 1960's, including once with a live demonstration complete with a robbery of North Town Missoula on Higgins Ave. The bank robberies (and local businesses) included robbing the train and Train Station. Pretending to rob traffic as they drove by for donations. It included a shoot out between The Vigilantes and members of the Plumber Gang. Those who survived were hung in a (staged) vacant lot across from the old Missoulian location on North Higgins. Darrel was unique in his ability for Fund Raising for various Youth Groups. One was the Annual Troop 60 Boy Scouts Chili Feed. His 'Off Time' included working Security for High School and College games. Darrel will be missed by family, friends, and the Missoula Community. His support for youths, the disabled and disadvantaged made him known by so many and his efforts will continue in the Missoula area.

Note Born in Scotland, William Thompson Russell Smith moved to Pittsburg alongside his family in 1819. He established his career painting theatrical scenes and commercial signs, a skill that brought him to Philadelphia in 1835 when he was hired to paint set designs for the Walnut Street Theater. He earned additional income through commissioned portraiture and romantic landscapes inspired by his contemporaries of the Hudson River School. Around this time, Smith started travelling throughout the eastern United States, painting and drawing landscapes he found from Virginia to New England. Later in his life, Smith focused heavily on documenting the landscape in and around Philadelphia, as seen in Sketching Along the Wissahickon, completed in 1874. The unidentified figure in the foreground may be Smith’s wife, Mary Priscilla Wilson, or perhaps their daughter, Mary Russell Smith, both of whom were also artists known to capture the intimate beauty of the Pennsylvania landscape.
