        Unsigned oil on canvas bust length portrait depicting a woman wearing a gray dress with jewelery including a beaded necklace, earrings and a ring. The woman's flesh tone and dark upswept hair contrast with the gradated pink background. Her left arm is resting on the back of her chair while she holds a pink purse. Housed in a modern giltwood frame. SIZE: 25" x 19-1/4". Overall 28-1/2" x 23-2/4. CONDITION: Very good, relined with scattered inpainting and minor touch up. 51335-1

        DOUBLE PORTRAIT ATTRIBUTED TO ROYALL BREWSTER SMITH (MASSACHUSETTS, 1801-1855). Oil on canvas, unsigned. Architectural setting with the Honorable and Mrs. B.C. Bailey of Bailey Island, Maine. Museum quality restoration. 29"h. 54"w., in a modern frame, 34"h. 59"w. Sold at Garth's, November 1994, lot 616, and September 1998, lot 426. This rare double portrait exhibits many recognised characteristics of Smith's portraits such as: abstract and quirky characterizations of subjects; noses painted in profile with shadow yet rest of pose is nearly frontal; close set eyes appearing almost crossed (most noticeable in Mr. Bailey); eyes lips fingers & nails are outlined; hands awkwardly drawn.         Her portrait inscribed "Miriam McDonald, born in the town of Standish, September 5th, 1812, painted April 1837," u.l. His portrait inscribed "Nathaniel Marshall Richardson, born in the town of Standish, June 28th 1814, painted April 1837," u.l. Each oil on canvas, 30 1/2 x 26 inches. Each signed on the reverse "By Royall B. Smith." According to genealogical records, Miriam (1812-1874) and Nathaniel had seven children.Literature: For a pair of Royall Brewster Smith portraits with similar inscriptions identifying the sitters, see the 1833 portraits of Eliza and John Read in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.The portraits of the Richardsons are referenced in Deborah Chotner, The National Gallery of Art, "American Naive Paintings," p. 361, no. 1.

        Royal Brewster Smith (Maine, 1801-1855) Portrait of Abner Chase Stockin, Age Three, of Monmouth, Maine, c. 1834. ,Unsigned, the sitter and artist identified in inscriptions on the reverse. Oil on canvas, depicting the boy seated in a painted chair, holding a book, 33 x 26 3/4 in., in a later molded giltwood frame. Condition: Relined, retouch. Provenance: Family descent. Exhibitions: Collector's View, March 15-April 20, 1986, Loch Haven Art Center, Orange County, Florida, exhibition label affixed to the back. Note: A note written by Nina Fletcher Little identifying the artist as Royal Brewster Smith is affixed to the reverse. Abner Chase Stockin was born Aug. 30, 1831, the son of Thomas Blossom Stockin and Lydia Ann Chase. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1857, was a teacher for twelve years, and later an educational publisher for thirty years. He married Helen Medora Towle (b. July 6, 1832) on August 3, 1858. They had at least one child, a son, Edwin Stockin (b. January 22, 1862, at Monmouth, Maine), who later became the publisher of the Youth's Companion of Boston. Abner died on January 11, 1901, at the age of seventy.
