Michael P. Smith (1937–2008) was an American photographer renowned for his documentary work capturing the culture, music, and people of New Orleans, particularly during the mid-20th century. Born in New Rochelle, New York, Smith moved to New Orleans in the early 1960s and began his career as a freelance photographer.Smith's photographs offer a vivid and intimate portrayal of New Orleans and its diverse communities, including scenes from Mardi Gras celebrations, jazz funerals, second-line parades, and everyday life in the city's neighborhoods. He had a keen eye for capturing the spirit and vitality of his subjects, often using black-and-white film to convey a sense of timelessness and authenticity. One of Smith's most famous bodies of work is his documentation of the Mardi Gras Indian tribes, a tradition of African-American cultural masking and performance in New Orleans. His photographs of Mardi Gras Indians are celebrated for their rich visual storytelling and their role in preserving and promoting this unique aspect of New Orleans culture. In addition to his work as a photographer, Smith was also a cultural historian and preservationist, actively involved in efforts to document and protect the cultural heritage of New Orleans. He published several books of photography, including "A Joyful Noise: A Celebration of New Orleans Music" (1991) and "Mardi Gras Indians" (1994), which showcase his iconic images of the city's cultural traditions.Smith's photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world and are held in numerous public and private collections. His work continues to be celebrated for its artistic merit, cultural significance, and contribution to the visual history of New Orleans. Measures 37.4 x 25.1.
