Mary Tillman Smith, Outsider Art Painting of a Figure in Pinks/Blues

        Est: $800 - $1,200

Mary Tillman Smith (American/Mississippi, 1904-1995) house paint on plywood plank painting in shades of pink and blue, depicting a figure with halo or corona, possibly the Virgin Mary. Signed en verso in marker: "Mary T. Smith". 34"H x 24"W. Circa 1970s. Provenance: Private Nashville collection; acquired mid 1980s. Biography: Mary Tillman was born into a farming family in Copiah County in Southern Mississippi, the third of thirteen children. Although highly intelligent, she suffered from an early age from a hearing impairment, which made oral communication difficult, and she found an outlet in art. After working as a domestic servant and enduring two unsuccessful marriages, she began filling her Hazelhurst, Mississippi yard with art in the 1970s, using found materials such as tin and plywood. Many of Smith's paintings exhibited an abstracted religious iconography inspired by her deep faith. She also produced many portraits of family and friends. After a stroke in 1985, she is said to have slowed down to "only" producing two pieces of work a day, and she is believed to have painted very few if any pieces between 1991 and her death in 1995, when she died at the age of 91. Mary Tillman Smith (American/Mississippi, 1904-1994) , "Untitled (Five Figures Against Yellow Background)", paint on found tin, signed en verso, 22 1/4 in. x 59 3/4 in., unframed . Provenance: The Doug and Cathy Gitter Collection. Note: Mary Tillman Smith was born in 1904 in Mississippi. The daughter of two sharecroppers, she faced difficulties early in her life due to a hearing impairment. She spent many years working as a domestic servant and only began to explore her artistic talent following her retirement in the 1970s. Often working with found scrap metal and house paint, Smith created strong and audacious compositions regularly inspired by her faith. Her paintings are highly coveted today and can be found in collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and High Museum of Art. Smith’s art was on display earlier this year in the solo show Mary T. Smith: I WE OUR at Shrine in New York. In the lot offered here, the intense, undiluted warm palette reverberates when offset by bold dark blue outlines on a yellow background. Smith’s hand proves steady and her brushstrokes strong and confident. The resulting work is a monumental opus of texture and visual noise resulting in an undeniably impactful masterwork. Note: Mary Tillman Smith was born to sharecroppers in rural Mississippi. She was born with a hearing impairment which resulted in difficulty speaking or being understood. As a result, she was ostracized by the local community and turned to art as a refuge. Smith painted on tin and plywood from the landfill near her home, and she was fascinated by patterns and lines. The work offered here is characteristic of her work, where she employed large fields of black to offset bright monochromatic backgrounds and attract passing motorists on the highway to her outdoor gallery.
