John 'Warwick' Smith, OWS - The New Road over the Pontine Marshes

          Est: £1,200 - £1,800

John 'Warwick' Smith, OWS,  British 1749-1831 The New Road over the Pontine Marshes;  pencil and watercolour on paper, signed, dated, and inscribed 'New Road over the Pontine Marshes / JohnSmith / 1803' verso, 23 x 34.5 cm.  Provenance:  with Martyn Gregory, London, where purchased by the present owner;  Private Collection, UK.  Exhibited:  March 1985, Martyn Gregory, 'Exhibition of Early English Watercolours', catalogue 39, lot 121.  Note:  'Warwick' Smith was the son of a gardener to the Gilpin family, and, as a result of this connection, went on to study under the animal painter Sawrey Gilpin (1733-1807). Over the course of his career, Smith became particularly celebrated for his topographical watercolours, depicting views across Britain and Italy, where he travelled under the patronage of George Greville (1746-1816) between 1776-81, leading to the publication of 'Select Views in Italy'.  Smith likely revisited the present sweeping marshland view several times over the years. A smaller sketch of a nearly identical scene, showing the Via Appia through the Pontine Marshes flanked by rustic architecture, was recorded in the collection of Sir John Trevelyan, 5th Baronet (subsequently with Abbott and Holder, London). That example was dated 1795. The present picture is a classic and striking example of Smith's work, with an expansive vista illuminated by soft, warm light. A similarly vibrant and warmly lit vista, also depicting the countryside between Naples and Rome, is held in the collection of the Morgan Museum and Library, New York [1984.20].

He was the son of a gardener to the Gilpin family, which assured him the opportunity to train under the animal painter Sawrey Gilpin. At the start of his career, he worked on Samuel Middiman’s Select Views in Great Britain and received the patronage of George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick, which allowed him to travel to Italy where he met fellow British artists such as Francis Towne, known for his landscapes of Italy and the English Lake District. He was nicknamed the “Warwick” and “Italian” Smith due to his frequent travels to Italy and his connection with Lord Warwick, who bought a large collection of his artworks that was sold at auction in 1936. After 1781, he decided to move to Warwick while still travelling frequently to Wales and to the Lake District. After or during one of this travels, he probably painted the following Tregaron, on the Berwyn Rivulet near its junction with the Teivy River.... He later moved to London and started to exhibit at the Watercolour Society. His watercolours were particularly successful thanks to his fine brushwork and effective colouring.

John Smith (1749-1831) ''The Grand Cascade at Tivoli'' Engraved Plate. Plate 34 from the book ''Select views in Italy'' by John Smith and engraved by William Byrne. John "Warwick" Smith was a British watercolor landscape painter and illustrator. Smith was born at Irthington, near Carlisle, Cumberland, the son of a gardener to the Gilpin family, and educated at St. Bees. The fortunate social connection allowed him to study art under the animal painter Sawrey Gilpin. Becoming known as a skillful topographical draughtsman, he was employed on Samuel Middiman's Select Views in Great Britain, and obtained the patronage of George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick, which enabled him to travel to Italy between 1776 and 1781. While there he met other British artists such as Francis Towne, Thomas Hearne and William Pars. He came to be known as "Warwick" or "Italian" Smith. In his subsequent works, which were largely views in Italy, he gradually abandoned the simple tinting to which watercolor work had previously been limited for a more effective mode of coloring, the novelty and beauty of which was much admired.
